Subaru paint. chipping? thin coat?
Preamble: Today I came into possession of a 2004 Silver WRX. I am well versed in the ways of the Rex, but I do have some lingering questions.
Perhaps this is heresay, but I have heard from unmentionable sources that Subaru's paintjobs aren't that sweet. I know one WRX owner that has many chips in the front of his '02. Seeing as how I've had my car for less than a day, I'm wondering if I should purchase a hood bra or take some precautions for protecting the paint from pebbles and whatnot. I regularly wax my vehicles.
Has anyone noticed that Subaru paint is weak?

Ok.... again.. *should have done another search* but Subaru's paint is near worst in all types of cars.
Those chips on your friend's hood... that's call characteristics! And all of us have "customized" chipped paint on the front of our hoods . I'd put on the bra if you are really worried, but the rocks n' what not are weird on our cars... they chip all the way up next to the window.
My opinion? Paint chips and stuff are just characteristics, I wouldn't get a bra.. it sorta makes it look *nicer* than the already mean look.

The factory paint jobs suck on Subarus. My bumper has so many chips in the paint that it might as well be called speckled and the hood is just as bad. Then theres the extremely thin metal used for the fenders which you had better never lean against or anything cause you can bet that you will have a nice dent afterwards. If you have problems with your paint don't even waste your time with SOA cause they don't care. As they told me when I tried to get some answers for my stock crap paint job they said that their paint is good enough for their standards.

The bra will interfere with airflow to the intercooler and is not recommended. I bought one from the dealer before the SOA d/c them and have modified it (cut part of the hood cover) and only use it in winter. Compared to other WRX's, the front of mine looks marginally better after 9 months, but i would not buy another.
The paint is not the best, I wax mine about 1 month, That seems to help my black paint resist the elements. I have never used a cleaner, just wax. Car washes will take it right off.
I recently used a wax stick and black wax on several scratches. It is a temporary fix that looks better than most "touch-up" jobs.
