Subaru is actually the Japanese name for the Pleiades constellation, which consists of six stars in a formation that has become the basis for the Subaru logo.
The Japanese word for star is actually "hoshi"

I've wondered what the symbolism of the Subrau emblem was about. The Pleiades is one of the coolest things in the sky, especially when viewed with a good pair of 15X70 binos. My question now is: why the Pleiades? What is the reason for picking this particular constellation for the Subaru emblem?
When I popped the hood of the WRX the first time, I actually told the salesman the engine looked like it had been retro-engineered from alien technology.
