The STi's are usually spotted on the track, boulevard, street racing or parked. The WRX's are seen on the commutes, long touring trips or tearing around on the roads. If the two are running against each other, the STi will get there (1/2) sec. ahead on 0-60 MPH and will lose the WRX sedan on the track at 1/4 mile. Tagging up on the rear is the WRX wagon.
The STi driver will glance at his rear view mirror more often and will be much more likely to have a radar detector or bung-hole exhaust plainly visible. All WRX's are likely to be driven solo, but if a passenger is aboard it is usually a weight-reduced female. With the WRX wagon: child-restraint seats, luggage and/or bike racks are often displayed.

Yes, STi fog covers is a very common mod for WRXs.
If a wrx owner intentionally make the wrx looks like a sti (Put on the huge STi wing, big hoodscoop, STi 17" BBS wheels, STi fogcovers, STi badges...etc), then it will be really hard to tell just by looking at the exterior
And, no, STi doesn't come with a roof scoop (You can purchase the vent and the scoop from STi, the company, though)

I thought the STI was a WRX. At least that's what mine says. It does have a roof rack and child seat..........Oh and a radar detector!
