I bought a Shelby (Omni) GLHS new in '86, number 391/500. So much fun for less money than a Mustang LX 5.0. Dodge always had a great grass-roots motorsports program, with lots of hop-up parts available through their (then) Mopar Performance catalog. In the late '80s, they were offering re-mapped ECUs that were 50-state legal. I bought one, as well as their 6-point bolt-in SCCA-legal cage that helped immensely with the Omni's unibody flex. Quality of the basic Omni was not so good , with lots of road noise on the highway, regardless of tire choice. Had a lot of electrical and air-conditioning problems after about seven years. The motor, however, was seemingly bulletproof at the near-stock power level I was running. I had 131,000 miles on the clock, with about 100 drag strip runs in the 14.6 to 14.7 range. Didn't burn oil, and passed smog with flying colors even at the end.

I'm glad to see that Dodge will be producing the SRT-4. It's a refreshing change to see an American sport compact car with some power. I'd really be interested in checking out that big FMIC setup firsthand.

I drive an 02 WRX now and it's as much fun as my GLHS, but in different ways. I bought the WRX not so much because of the performance, but because of its performance *potential*.
