Salvaged WRX
Hi... a friend of a friend is looking to sell a 2002 Blue WRX with 4,600 miles on the odometer that he bought and put together. He showed me a pic of the car when he bought it from the yard and how it looks now. it is is GREAT SHAPE. the engine was damaged.... soemthing about a bent valve but he's havin it fixed at Subaru. The body repair is also great, not a single scratch or dent, plus he added a lot of mods to it. It has a carbon fiber hood, HKS uppipe, downpipe, and Hipower exhaust, taillight, performance gauge pack, STI short shifter, new tints and clear corners. He's asking 18,900 negotiable. I was worried about the engine but then again, Subaru is doing the work for that and i know it for a fact cuz i saw it on the lift there. Give me your opinions on this. it would help a lot. thanks.

1. How much do you like your friend? (If anything goes sour, he could become an ex-friend real fast)
2. Doesn't sound like you know nearly enough about the accident - we're talking a 19k investment here, if it were me I would want to know in minute detail and examine the damage and repair myself, which brings me to...
3. I'm not sure you're savvy enough technically to make a judgement call on whether the repair is good or not. Nothin' wrong with that, I couldn't do it myself - that's one reason I hang out here, to learn.
4. I gotta agree with Cabal, that seems a lotta money for a two year old car that's been in an accident. Low miles doesn't help you any if the repairs weren't done right and of course you don't have your warranty to fall back on. For that or a little bit more, you should be able to find a used '02 that hasn't been pranged.
In short, I wouldn't do it.

Hes a long time friend. I recently spoke wit the guy who's selling it and he said that he would lower it to $17,500 FIRM and would go even lower if I found anything else wrong with it. After he said that, I brought another friend of mine to go check out the car (he's a technician from subaru). We put it on a lift and an hour later, he said he couldnt find anything wrong except that it was missing the alternator cover.
HEEELLLLLPPPP. I can't figure out what to do. The car looks SOOOoOooO Gooooood. Looks-wise, its different. Not too many people have this setup around here. The engine didnt rattle when we drove it and it was smooth.
More opinions please.
Ps... The frame is straight.

What exactly happened to the car? Did the engine damage happen in the accident? If so, I don't see how the frame could be straight, unless it's been straightened, and in that case, don't buy it. Like has been said, that's a lot of money for a 2 year old car with a rebuilt/salvaged title. Also remember, that title will make your resale value much lower. Why should you pay all that money for something you yourself would have a hard time selling? Not worth it, IMHO.

yeah honestly, it sounds like a good deal, but think about the future: I know we don't buy cars with the intention of selling them in the future, but what if something comes up where you can't maintain payments, you would have to sell it, and there's no way in hell anyones going to pay anything over $13 for a Salvage car. And like others said, you can find a nicely maintained wrx that has a clean title. Good luck.

RUN! IT'S A TRAP!
Seriously. Salvaged cars are not your friends if you aren't VERY clear as to what made them salvaged. Re-sale value is lost, and dealers generally won't even take them for trade.
Don't buy it, ESPECIALLY not for that much money. You could buy a perfect condition WRX for that scratch.
