Road Trip Handling: Good or Bad?
Hey all...
Well, spring break is coming up, and I'm thinking of going on a 2400-mile, round-trip road trip, but before I let my WRX take the open road, I wanted to know two things. First off, they tell you not to keep the RPM's at the same level for too long when you first buy a WRX. Well, mine has over 10K miles on it now, but a long road trip will be doing that the whole way...so even tho it's already broken in, will I put excessive wear and tear on my WRX by taking it on a such an expedition? Secondly, if anyone has gone on a road trip with their WRX yet, how does it handle? Does it get too hot, or uncomfortable? Does it get good gas mileage, etc? Thanks guys.
Also, did you all have to re-register to the forums after the i-club domain name juggling went through? I did...haven't been on here in a while. Well, hope to hear from you all soon.
Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry about the car the RPM thing. The owners manual only suggests that type of treatment for the first 1k miles.
As far as comfort over distance, I drove out to Fort Bragg from where I live a few weeks ago (the weekend I got my car). It is about 800 miles round trip - all in one day.
We had me, my gf and my best friend. The car was comfortable the whole day. When I got out, I wasn't overly tired (I needed to stretch but sit for four hours and you'll need to stretch too ).
I had a great time - wouldn't mind driving it that long or longer again.

I always do long trips with the rex
I've done 2 5000 mile trips with my wrx wagon. I drive800 miles round trip at least 2 times a month . I did a trip from Orange county ca, to the grand canyon to vail colorado, through the great plains, down to NewOrleans, to Houston, to New Mexico and back. The car kills it on the road. Very comfy.
About to Drive to new orleans next month from Cali.

WRX makes an excellent driving machine
Last September my wife and I did a road trip vacation from SF/Bay Area up to Crater Lake in Oregon. We sat on I-5 for hours, hovering around 80-85mph. Very comfortable and the car never missed a beat. Once we spent a few days at Crater Lake, we got rained out on the last night (tent camping), we packed up during the storm (5:30am!!) and hit the road back to California. Despite the torrential rains and wind, we were making excellent time down into the Ashland/Medford area. Later we ended up near Mt Shasta at Burney Falls and then Mt Lassen. We spent most of our week in our sedan, packed to the rafters with tent, sleeping bags, junk food....etc. and loved every minute of it.
I think you'll enjoy your trip. With over 10K on your car, I wouldn't worry about constant load/RPM. I would have the car serviced before you go, and keep an eye on tire pressure, etc.
enjoy,

Yeah, I would make sure you change your oil first and check everything else, but otherwise they rock. I drove my WRX from Montana to RI (2400 miles) this spring and loved it. You get great millage too. On long road trips I drive 5mph over at the most and set cruise for about 4 hours straight (a tank full). Our millage was anywhere from 24~29 depending on the speed limit we were in and wind conditions, and we had the car FULL of stuff. The handleing is great for trips as when you get a bit tired the car still tracks straight. It handles so well it goes where you look and you don't have to fight to keep it going stright. My car was wrecked at xmas time and I have been driving a Dadge Dakota pickup and Honda accaord and they both have such loose steering they go from one side of the lane to the other on their own and you have to constantly aim them to keep them tracking straight. I miss the wrx where you just looked ahead and you went there. I'm getting another when the 04s come out and can't wait to do some road trips again. Your car will be great. Enjoy your trip and keep an eye out for the idiot that could do to your car what happened to mine.
