random subaru fact of the day

subaru is a common japanese name for the star cluster pleiades, also know as the seven sisters (greek mythology). different cultures have their own tales as to how the stars came to be (the 7th brightest is a little dim compared to the rest)

look familiar?

Here's a bit more detailed write up of it from the Subaru Global Website:

The first president of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), Kenji Kita, had some definite opinions on the subject of automobiles. "If you're going to build a car, build a full-fledged car." "Japanese cars should have Japanese names." Mr. Kita was ardent about producing passenger cars and was the most passionate of all about the 1954 prototype of the Company's first passenger car, the P-1.

Mr. Kita canvassed the Company for suggestions about naming the P-1, but none of the proposals were appealing. In the end, Mr. Kita gave the car a beautiful Japanese name that he had been quietly cherishing in his heart --- Subaru.

Subaru is the name of a star cluster in the Taurus constellation. Six of its stars are visible to the naked eye, but about 250 bluish stars can be seen if one uses a telescope.

In the West the cluster is called Pleiades, in China, Mao, and in Japan, Subaru ("to govern" or gather together"). In Japan, it also goes by the name Mutsuraboshi ("Six Stars"), under which title it appears frequently in very old Japanese documents such as Kojiki and Manyosyu and literature such as Makura-no-soshi. Clearly, this is one of the clusters much loved by the Japanese from ancient times. Interestingly enough, FHI was created by the merger of six companies, so you can see what a truly evocative name Subaru is.

i light of subaru history-

one day while selling a wrx to a customer i tried to reinforce the formidability of subaru. so i made a statement saying that subaru has a robust and interesting and succesful history. i then started to say that FHI was a major supplier in terms of aircraft for the major world war. . . i then paused and realized the poor selling point i just stated. i started to laugh in front of the customer and said, "sorry folks... i guess thats not much of a strong point considering japan lost the war huh?" we all started laughing.. nonetheless they ended up driving the wrx home 30 minutes later.

Space is cool.

There are even more than 7 stars, in this picture, they label 9 stars that make up pleiadus. 6 stars, are the ones a human eye can see.

Another random fact: Subaru referred to the SVX as Alcyone during development. (The brighest star)
Too bad they couldn't get a manual tranny in therr.

Sweet wrexr, that's made from the same Subaru that makes our cars?

Impresa: an emblem or device with a motto.

Anyone know the meaning of ImpreZa?

No, FHI sticks mainly with heavy engineering. Automotive, Aerospace

The SVX and the XT-6 were both called the Alcyone in Japan too

Nope. I think this one is a Japanese government sponsored science project.
