New Way to Capture Video
Hey All,
I wasn't sure exactly where to post this, so check it out:

A friend an I bought this camera from Fry's (electronics store) -

and screwed it into one of the license plate holder holes. We then routed the video out from this to a digital camera that recorded the movie. It looks really sweet and you can get that extreme low angle shot. Now imagine this on a road course or an autocross!! The sweet thing is that it is outside the car (no glare) and the camera can go under the seat or even in the glove box. I'll see if i can get some more exciting footage.

Oh, and here's a cool way to get audio with that video. I bought two battery powered lapel mics from Best Buy ($30 each) and taped one near the exhaust and another near the intake. I then got a mono-mono to stereo y-adapter from Radio Shack and routed the two mics into the audio input on the camcorder. This clip:

is of a VR6 Jetta (don't have a clip of the WRX yet) and it sounds awesome. Another cheap way to get really good sound.

Sweet - that's a nice cheap camera head. I've had some fun with my remote camera head (line to my DV camera inside the car) at rally cross events - so this thread is as good as any to drag them all out.
Most of the videos I mixed to music - most of the time was either before I bought the exernal mic or I forgot to bring it with me. For the bumper-cam shots I bolted a mount onto the tow-hook that screws into the bumper beam. Rock solid video that way, even on dirt.
Here's some from last year in my WRX:

(not an external camera, but it's a cool short one )

Some from this year in my STi:

This next one was suction-cup'd to the STi wing w/ external mic. Cable in view, nothing but wind noise... it was just a test.... not too pretty. Plus bonus very-loud in-car video from inside a friend's RX-7.

And from an autocross event. And yes, I suck on pavement, but at least you can check out what it looks like at an auto-x.

I don't have any pics, but the install is really easy. The camera I linked to has a little mounting bracket with a hole in it. I just took out one of the license plate screws and used it to mount the camera to the front of the car. The wires then run up in the channel between the hood and the fender. Just crack the window open a little to get them to the camera inside the car and that's it.
