New noisy belts...what quiets them?
I've been told to use a soap bar on my noisy belts. New Belts are pretty noisy. I thought at first they would quiet down but it is going on 10,000 miles now and still noisy. I know they sell belt dressing but isn't there some shadtree mechanic style way of quieting them? like instead of HEET for the winter gas anti-freeze you can use isopropyl alcohol.

Are the belts loose or just getting old, dried and cracking? If they are loose then just tighten them. If they need to be changed then go for it. Belts on a Subaru are really easy to do. None of that working between a frame and the motors like on other 4 cylinders.

belts don't squeal unless they are old and cracked, or loose for the most part on subaru's. you really shouldn't need to used belt dressing on the type of belt subs have. either tighten, or replace. spraying them w/ something will only take away the noise for a few hundred miles, and it will be back. and this comes from experience, having worked on many subarus at a garage.
