Hi my name's Brian and I'm looking to throw away my civic for an impreza which I've been wanting since I was 16.
I want a 4 door m/t in the 5-$7,000 range. What are my options?
I found a 1995 Impreza L on autotrader with 94k miles on it and I was wondering if that vehicle has any potential. If not can somebody lead me in the right direction?
So far I know nothing about these cars. But i'm very eager to learn so please pass any info to me here or at Brian9hurley@yahoo.com
Thanks

hey there
does an impreza have potential? you bet!!!! (and that goes for all years)
5-7k will get you a nice used 94-96 impreza. it might have some miles on it, but they are great cars, and taken care of properly, you can a ton of miles out of them.
personally, i prefer the 97-01 models. they made some slight styling changes both inside and out. they are more money though. BUT the older ones are a smidge lighter, depending on the model.
the sky is pretty much the limit performance wise. depending on budget, you can make a total sleeper, or go for a full show car. the wrx motors slide right in, and are even smog legal in california. the market has boomed lately in the states and parts are plenty for both the old chassis (gc8) and the new (gd.) wrx.
surf around in the other forums. you will find a ton of info about suspension, wheels, engine mods, exterior mods, interior mods, etc, etc.
my advice is figure out what car you want, then device a budget for mods. then plan out the order of mods you want to do based on your budget. trust me, once you start to mod, you will not want to stop, so plan on getting a few jobs (unless your rich
take care, and welcome brian

You can save a lot of money by buying a L over an RS, though there is definately a performance difference.
AVOID buying a 1.8 powered Impreza...they use an older version of the flat four and upgrading is an expensive proposition, cheaper to buy the right car up front.
Thanks to Subaru's modular concept of building cars, most anything from one model can be adapted to another. Our L, for example, has been upgraded to RS suspension, brakes, and front end sheet metal. Benefit: the L is far lighter than the RS. Ours has NO power bull****, sunroof, etc. We don't want nor need that stuff. A 2.2 Impreza will have at least 135hp (more on newer models), which is equal or better than many other cars in it's class. The RS gets you up to 165. Our car weighs the same and is faster than the VW A2 Jetta GLI it replaced!
You can read about our L project here:

Well thank you I appreciate the info and thanks to 2.2RS for the very informative web site
Now the hard part is actually buying a used Impreza. I swear to god I have only seen about 4 Imprezas in the whole state of Oklahoma and 1 of them had Texas tags...
If I wait long enough I'm sure an L will come up for sale in the area but if I want a (real) RS I'm going to have to buy one out of state I'm sure.

hm.. i am also looking to purchase a car in a modest price range without giving up much performance and quality of car. I have always wanted a 97-01 impreza over the newer bug eyed ones but was drawn back because of increased performance in the new models. So how difficult would it be to purchase a 97-01 RS and swap say.. a STi engine in? What else would i need to change in essence of keeping the car in good working shape? And how much would the project range up to be about? I know I would probably be gettin myself in for a big on going project with no job and school to worry about but hey, the idea is nice.
