My Wheel well fell out wtf?

So I was driving on I-5 last week and all of a sudden it sounded and felt like I ran over a big rig tire tread, but was very surprised because I didn't see anything in the road ahead of my car. I looked in the rear view and saw a black thing in the road that looked like a tire. I figured I was zoning out or looking away or something. I get to my destination and as I'm putting money in a parking meter, I see some light through my bumper that didn't look normal. Upon closer inspection, I realized the entire wheel well had come out. My question is, if I'm just driving in the city, no mud/snow, does it really matter that I don't have one? Is it possible to do any damage? Has this happened to anyone else and does anyone have experience with subaru replacing it under warranty? Thanks, Steve

Thanks for the replies, I guess I mean fender liner. It might have something to do with taking out the snorkus thing but I did that 4 years ago and had no problems until now.

That happened to me 3 days after buying my 09 wrx. We were heading to Orlando and the plastic under the front bumper and in the fender well just ripped off. The only good part about this is mine was covered under warranty.
