all im trying to tell the kid is that the automatic wrx aint a bad car by any means. i was sore at first when i got the auto, especially since i got to test drive both (the stick for the hell of it), but after owning the car and driving it for a while, i realized how great a performer it is.
and i think you are missing the topic of this post. re-read the posts he made, where does he ask anything about how to get out of getting an auto? he is obviously very grateful to get a wrx, paid for by his parents, at this age.
he can go ahead and try to pursuade them, like i said - good luck, but if he can't, dont act like you just got an 89 accord, its still a sports car.
o and btw imingci: edmunds.com tested an auto wrx at 15.1 seconds in the 1/4.

Well,
I'll chime in and say, I don't think his parents are wise to be getting a teenager a fast car. But, at least they're smart enough to get an auto, so he can pay attention to the road, and not worry about shifting. It would have been a cold day before my mom and dad would have bought me anything like a WRX.

thats one thing i have to totally agree with you on. thank god i was brought up with the maturity to not be stupid with my car, no street racing or reckless driving. but i see too many kids at my school everyday, even with total beaters, who act like complete morons.

yep...morons are morons no matter the car. you could argue that a wrx would be better for a teenager whos more than likely to drive fast anyway because of the better handling. if i was a parent i wouldnt buy my teenager anything like a wrx unless they had an exceptional grasp of what the car is all about. it does seem like the kid who originally posted might possibly be an exception, but who knows...thats up to his parents....who in this case sound clueless.

I am 17. My parents just paid for a 2003 manual WRX that I share with my dad (the rest cant drive stick). Here is exactly what I told my 'rents when trying to convince them to get the manual:
1) The car is safer with the manual. You get much more control over the engine, and much more control over the car.
2) You have the ability to achieve FAR better fuel economy with a manual.
3) The WRX was designed with the manual transmission as the largest seller. It is a slick manual with an easy clutch and a tight feel to the shifter. My parents drove stick back in the day when the clutches sucked and everything else was no good... tell yours that this is a different generation of cars with a much nicer tranny
4) Insurance might be less with a manual (not sure about this)
5) Most used WRX buyers will want a stick. Your parents' figures on the resale value of the auto need to be looked at.
You can try to push those points... I hope it works out for you! The subaru WRX is one of the most fun cars I've ever had the privelage of driving, and even if you can't get the 5spd don't worry... at least you won't have to deal with stick during heavy traffic or parallel park in a tight spot with a manual. When we got our civic my dad refused to consider manual transmission... I asked politely a few times and he said no every time so I just let it alone. I think that you should ask your parents a few different ways at a few different times, perhaps even try to change their minds by presenting the obvious benefits a manual provides to this particular vehicle, but do NOT hassle them if they really don't want it. Your parents are being extremely generous by purchasing a car for you, and ultimately it's their decision on how they want to spend their money.
And to all the trolls: this kid is not a brat. He is asking his parents to make decision that would turn out better for both parties in the long run. It's safer, less expensive, more fun, and allows higher resale value. There's no shame in asking for something you want, especially if it helps all involved parties.

Every single kid I know that drives a stick is a better driver than the kids that drive half asleep munching on a burger and sippin on a coke. Theres a reason alot more ditzy blondes drive auto (dont take that the wrong way auto dudes!), and it's because it takes less effort to drive.

I bet tthe kid already has the car and has turned it over to one of his children this thread is so old. geez.
My first car was a LeBaron automatic 83 it talked like an old mans Knight Rider. Cept it was an ugly brown and no matter how hard i tried i couldn't get it more than 3 feet off the ground. I put my granfathers roof on for him at 16. Earned the car that way. then I beat the **** out of it. transmission, axles, rims. its a good thing i didnt have the kinda power of a WRX. The car was auto and I loved it none the less.

auto vs. manual
I've been torturing myself about the auto vs. manual thing myself. I am paying for the car, so that is not an issue. But:
My S. O. refuses to learn to drive a manual, so she wouldn't be able to drive it if something happens to her car. My other car is also a manual, so she wouldn't be able to drive that either.
Also, I am using it for a a nasty 45 mile commute, primarily in Winter or bad weather. I do it now with a manual with no problems but...
Most importantly, the manual appears to be having problems while it doesn't appear that the auto has the same problems. OTOH, the auto in the SVX was reputed to last about 70,000 miles before complete replacement, so the WRX could be the same once folks get some miles on them.
