Re: MY parents making me get an auto WRX
The people on here are right about having a sports car with an automatic. Allot is lost with an automatic over a manual but keep in mind, the WRX is a great car! It’s the safest in its class (www.hwysafety.org), reliable (Consumer Reports), and it’s not a common cookie-cutter design (who do you think). Keep in mind that this is going to be something you’re going to have for awhile and if you are stuck getting an automatic I'd look at other automatic cars out there that will appeal to what you want out of the car. Why do they want you to get an auto? "Because we said so" or "It’s our money" is not a very respectful answer...
I don’t have an automatic but I have driven plenty of them and I have come up with these conclusions between the transmissions:
A manual is safer then an automatic because a car will handle differently depending on how much gas you give it. (This was true on my old Ranger too.) If you don’t give it enough gas then you might understear. Give it to much and you might do a 180 but if you give it enough then you can maneuver and avoid that deer, fallen tree, or big *** Ford F350! A WRX with the auto can be underpowered when you’re not on boost (just like the manual) but its not as drastic. It takes time to learn how to drive a manual but it’s worth it. With a manual you have more control in every aspect.
I think w/ the automatic 0-60 is 7.5 - 8.0 seconds. 0-60 for the manual is 5.5 - 6.0. Yes, you can kick *** with the manual but that also equates into passing power. I've raced mine a few times but I appreciate it more when I accelerate onto the interstate. There are times when you need the gear ratios that the manual provides, thus, becoming another safety issue. There will be times when you’re pressured by the car(s) behind you to not slow them down when their trying to get onto the interstate, via an entrance with no shoulder, and interstate traffic moving much faster then you are. It just takes one bad wreck... (We don’t have the best civil engineers here in Austin.)
Fuel economy is better then the auto. Its lighter (better handling) then the auto and I wound never buy a sports car with an automatic. If you get rid of it maybe a dealership could sell an auto WRX with a salesmen to someone who hardly cares about what the car can do compared to how good the car looks but a manual will be buyer's preference who puts function over form. A salesman won’t be needed.
I hope this helps, good luck. Oh btw, you don’t sound like a bratty *** kid. My parents wouldn’t have bought me a WRX but if they did and they were forcing me to gett an auto I would also be on here asking for ways to talk them into a manual. Keep us posted.

P.S. What is a MBC?

Explain to them that you want a stick because you like WRXs. Why do you like WRX's? Because their fast, fun cars, and fast fun cars are better with sticks. 99% of people who like WRX's buy em because their fast and fun and know their even more fun with a stick and wont buy an auto. In other words, an auto will actually be HARDER to sell and the dumbass at the dealer doesnt know ****. Tell em that and they should change their minds. My experience with the scoobie dealers has all been bad. The guy that sold me my WRX told me, completely sure of himself, that turbo cars dont need to broken in and I could drive it like a maniac right out the lot. Ummm, yeah.

Yep, for your TYPICAL car an auto will sell much better than a manual, and a sunroof is right up there with those resale stats. However, the WRX typically does not fall into that category. Go to the dealer and check out how many manuals they have vs. automatics, you'll see it's a lot different than your typical camry/corolla/civic. Your family friend is right in general, but very wrong about the WRX.
BMW analogy: over 90% of E46 3-series sedans sold are automatics. However, if you look at the coupes, I believe the percentage drops to 50% or so. Even then, I'd take my luck at selling a manual WRX rather than a manual 3-coupe anyday.
Good luck

don't get auto
i think for this car... the resell is better in stick.. thats why most of the cars are made in stick.. plus you get better fuel mileage.. i mean.. if you're gonna resell your car.. you gotta think who you'll be selling to.. probably another car enthusiast who wants to drive a stick.. now if you were gettin an accord or camry.. i would say get an auto.. even a corolla.. but not a subaru.. specially wrx...

Just like in a VW Corrado. The bulk of them are Manual, and you can't give the auto cars away.
But back on the note of being given a WRX, be quiet and take what ever car they hand you. Me personally, I got an 89 Escort LX, that I had to share with a brother and sister. So getting an auto WRX isn't going to kill you......and yes...my escort was even auto. Must just suck being you.

The car and driver test of the manual WRX was slower than the auto wagon in 1 test not by much though....... I'm sure it has alot to do with the driver....I wish we had the autotronic option here like in japan on the STI so I could shift If I wanted

You can drive auto all you want when you are older and got tired of shifting all the time!!! But right now buy a manual cause you can have fun and learn how to drive a manual~
Auto is not bad but come on, just admit it guys...... a sport car like wrx should be manual only! like the Integra type-r, who will want a auto type-r or auto evolution??
I am sure you will get a higher chance to sell your wrx if it's manual! You will get a higher chance to sell an Accord if it's auto of course! but not with wrx......

some great quotes in this thread:
AWD OWNZ U "Who cares what they want?"
thanks for the input, AWD OWNZ U. you're a moron.
Craigs02WRX " Why do they want you to get an auto? "Because we said so" or "It’s our money" is not a very respectful answer..."
and we all know that as your parents they owe you a solid, respecful answer. Craigs02WRX-you amuse me with your stupidity.
Br1t1shguy "Explain to them that you want a stick because you like WRXs. Why do you like WRX's? Because their fast, fun cars, and fast fun cars are better with sticks."
britishguy is a genius. many parents would be won over by this argument.
MalakingTiti "Try to persuade them like never before. A WRX with an automatic transmission is wickety wickety WHACK!".
'nough said.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cabal "I'm afraid you lost all sympathy from me with that line. I wish I had the hardship of having my parents FORCE a $23 grand car on me and FORCING me to use a transmission that wasn't my top pick. Damn, life must really suck to be you."
AMEN!
WRBlue "I would respectfully pass on your parents offer. Tell them that you really want a stick, and you will purchase a WRX with a 5spd as soon as you have saved up $24,000.00.'
well put.
