turboback is more extensive, catback is simply from the catalytic converter to the muffler, TBEs are illegal in many cases because you're removing the cat, catbacks are not because the cat stays.

Catback replaces the piping and muffler from the catalytic converter back. The cats block airflow which hold back power.

The downpipe has 2 cats in it -- a turboback exhaust replaces everything from the turbo (the downpipe, midpipe and muffler), hence the name "turboback" In order to make power, you need to ditch the catalytic converters -- 1 in the uppipe and 2 in the downpipe. You can go catless or catted. Be wary that this is illegal and may effect smog tests depending on your state.

Just changing the muffler(axleback) or catback wont really do squat for power, but it will give you more of the boxer rumble. Do some searches and you will find tons more info.

TBE is the way to go. You will see substantial gains over just having a CBE. I think it's somewhere around 18+whp over stock, if I remember correctly. You will see more and will improve your WRX even better when you combine it with an engine management like Cobb AccessPORT, and can be pushed further when you have it Protuned.

Basically, you have more doors to open when you have TBE or an engine management to begin with, vice versa. I have Cobb AP stage 2 which consists of TBE, engine management and having a stock WRX over my current setup does not come close to be compared.

I can tell you a whole lot of this but the best way to learn is to read up about it.

I was reading up on the Stage 2 package. Looks good to me. Did you keep the exhaust that came with it?

I actually think they are good for long trips. I've been on a couple in a 2 different WRX's, a sedan and a wagon, and both were comfortable. I thoroughly enjoyed the road trips I've been on. One of the trips in my wagon we had 4 people and everyone was comfortable. I heard little to no complaining from the back seat, and there was plenty of room for everyones crap. I'm not sure what Sinister is talking about. They aren't as cushy as an SUV, but they are a heck of a lot more fun.

I was wondering more about the engine. Especially since the turbo will be partially running!

unless you're planning on taking long trips @ 140mph it probably won't be a problem

This is a common issue in 04-05 WRXs!!! no exhaust without at least an AcessPort, an Ecutek or somekind of tuning.

Cobb stg2=good choice.

My opinion....a pipe is a pipe. Buy one that is 3", is in your price range, and sounds good to you.

There a few different kinds of designs, but they all do the same thing. If I were to go back in time, I would have bought a used turboback and saved some $$
