junk title?
i just checked out a 2001 RS 2.5 coupe today. it looked brand new, and i even test drove it and it drove really well too.
the car has 34,000 miles, and the guy is selling it for $10,000. he mentioned that there was only one accident that it's been in, and not even the airbags were deployed, since they are still original. he said that only the front bumper and front headlights were damaged, and have already been replaced.
problem is, i just checked the carfax for it, and it's been reported as a "junk title".
ill post the detailed vehicle history.

When the salvage title was issued, it was sold in Rancho Cordova, where the Subaru recycling place is. I think if its sold from there it has to have a salvage title for it. Run a search for the licene plate or VIN number, or try calling rancho cordova to see if they have it on file. Based on when it was registered and to who, sound like it was purchased as a company car and it got into an accident. They sold it to Rancho Cordova, they had it/fixed it up in 3 months and sold it. I would have it THOUGHORLY checked out though, that looks like alot of junk title/certificates issued. And the guy might have bought it just to see it for a profit. Good luck

Another thing to consider Insurance companies will not "total" out a car unless it is not worth repairing the damage. I doubt the insurance company totaled the vehicle for a damaged front bumper and headlights. They would be loosing to much money that way. Once the vehicle is considered totaled it goes one of several different places. The local bone yard or to someone who buys the vehicle for the purpose of trying to rebuild the vehicle or for parting it out. Once the insurance totals a vehicle the title becomes a slavage title. The bad thing about buying a car like this is that you never know what type of gremlins will appear down the road. You can have frame damage, electrical problems, drivetrain problems etc. Then of course you will have no recourse. Also salvaged title vehicles might have componets from a stolen vehicle too. It is not uncommon for auto thieves to get the same car as the totaled car and and switch the totaled car's vin plate with the stolen vehicles vin plate. Then here you go down the street thinking wow what a sweet deal you got on this car and then one day the police take away your car because it was a stolen car and you are out of your money. You may also have trouble get financing for the vehicle, not really sure if the lender would be willing to loan money on a car that was totaled out by the insurance company. Check with your insurance agent too they may not want to insure the vehicle.
Just some thoughts.....

Is that the car in the Sacramento Bee that is completely mis-printed in the add?
Anyhow, a salvage title would suck to own if you try to re-sell the car, and insurance would be bad... But if its rebuilt from the Rancho Recylcer place it should be a rather decent car.
One question though, did the guy trying to sell it have a russian accent? There was anothe RS I checked out two years ago for about that price that was also a salvage titled car and im curious if its the same guy.
If you really want it, offer $8k. If they say no say a salvage titled car isnt worth any 10 grand and see what they say.

dude it tells you the answer to your question. yes it has been more invovled than a minor accident.. If you buy the car.. ask yourself.. Why did I run a car fax? so I wouldnt buy a crap car.. Well its a crap car ohh I'll buy it anyways.. donest make good sense
Consumer Rated Condition: Good
"Good" condition means that the vehicle is free of any major defects. The paint, body and interior have only minor (if any) blemishes, and there are no major mechanical problems. In states where rust is a problem, this should be very minimal, and a deduction should be made to correct it. The tires match and have substantial tread wear left. A clean title history is assumed. A "good" vehicle will need some reconditioning to be sold at retail; however major reconditioning should be deducted from the value. Most recent model cars owned by consumers fall into this category.
Private Party Value $12,980
Private Party value represents what you might expect to pay for a used car when purchasing from a private party. It may also represent the value you might expect to receive when selling your own used car to another private party.
So you save 3 grand for a car worth $6500... TMU cars a bad titles= half of real value
