Ohh and wherever you got the impression that people use low-traction tires for drift is bogus. Can you tell me a manufacturer of "low traction" tires?

Gay as in stupid. I've slid through many a corner, and yes, it IS quite a blast. Until I bought a DSM a couple years ago I was always a muscle car fan (a few Firebirds, '81 Corvette), and kicking the back end out is common and easily controlled. My point is that decreasing the handling ability of the car in order to drift is stupid.
By low traction tires I simply meant tires that are not good quality sticky tires. Something like your typical cheap-o 40,000 mile all-season radial.
Here is a good example of what I mean by gay. Back in highschool (mid 80's) I had a '77 Celica GT (rear wheel drive, 5-speed), that I absolutely drove the **** out of. Once in a while I would over-inflate the rear tires a bit (rated for 32, I'd pump them up to around 37), then I'd attack one of my many favorite twisty roads, sliding and drifting all over the place. Fun? Yup. But kinda stupid (gay) to actually lower the handling ability just to slide around. Converting an AWD to RWD for this is an extreme example.
As to me driving a Neon.. No thanks. I don't like FWD cars. I've only ever bought one FWD for myself, a beater Beretta GT that I used to go to work and back when I had to park in a questionable part of town

As for the RWD wrx....there is nothing wrong with that, If you notice the JGTC Impreza is RWD also, that's a pure bred race car. Now is there anything wrong with that? NO.
Drift is an Art and a exceptional skill

Wow drifting is stupid eh? Just because you make some modifications to help the car to be able to slide around is not stupid. If you can drift really well and make it look like a art form THAT'S NOT STUPID!! That's just plain awesome. It takes some amazing skill to be able to control a car and do those things. Any one that can control a car like that should be proud of themselves and should also earn all respect from others. It's just like who we give respect to an amazing Basketball player because of their accomplishments.

don't hate it because don't have a car that can't do it now or can't perform a drift like the pros.

I'll type slowly this time. Modifying your car so that it handles worse in an effort to make it easier to drift is stupid, gay, whatever. Drifting, powersliding, whatever you wish to call it can be quite fun and if done well is very impressive.
I ALSO said RWD is better than AWD on dry roads only a few posts ago in THIS thread. If I could buy a RWD WRX for a bit less than an AWD I'd do it. I'd possibly choose RWD over AWD at the same price.
My Corvette can drift just fine, TOO easy to be honest. The only problem with the Corvette is it's at my dad's place (haven't wanted to spend the $1,500 to have it shipped here after I moved away, but I'll get it this summer after I move to NC).
On a side note, the most impressive drifting I've ever seen was someone in an AWD (Lancer EVO actually). It was in an actual race not just a line of cars driving along drifting, and the driver was tearing it up, just destroying the competition. Amazingly impressive (until he crashed and rolled it anyway).
edit: As for your basketball player analogy, I think it would be more accurate to compare making the car easier to drift with lowering the hoop to 8' in order to do some amazing slam dunks... Do it stock (at 10') impressive. Modify the situation to make it easier (at 8'), gay. Back in college I used to play ball with a group of friends. Occasionally we would play at a grade school with 9' hoops where even I could occasionally dunk. Fun yes, but not impressive.

Does anyone wonder about the poor handeling inherent in a rwd car with 60% of the weight on the front wheels? And wouldn't that require much different suspension tuning than what we are used to now?
#36
Quite a bit of weight would be lost from the front if the FWD assembly was removed. Could do some more for equal distribution. RWD would be better for (1/4 mile straight).

Lets get this straight, first of I drive my car because its fun to drive, I drove my 87 Civic SI because it was fun to drive and I will continue to purchase cars that are fun to drive. No matter what style fwd, awd, rwd, turbo n/a etc... Some of the funnest cars I have driven have been underpowered fwd's SUBARU JUSTY w00t w00t.
Things brings be back to handling, it is a subjective topic.
We all are probably at a track a maximum of 1 day a month. Keeping this in mind wouldnt it be safe to assume that tuning should probably have less to do with grip/trap times/lateral g's and more to do with SMILE Factor.
And isnt that relative?
Tune for what you do, its not dumb unless it doesnt invovle performance.
Personally I prefer oversteer, and a flat car, luckily I have the option of changing dampening on the fly THANK YOU TEIN.

Wish the DCCD in the STi could go to 100% rear on the toggle. Think a RWD subie would rock. But the one in the mag broke his rear driveshaft when he attempted to do a burn out.
My cat's breath smells like cat food.

My V6 S-10 just fishtails like a bastard all over the place in the slightest amount of rain going up a hill. I don't even take it out in the snow. Anyone want to buy a nice, used S-10? You can drift all you want. Hell, you can drift all the way to the post office, the grocery store, anywhere...

You're forgetting what makes the Civic so popular. Most ricers aren't terribly concerned with performance, which is why they buy civics. If they wanted to have performance, they'd all be buying older turbo cars like Mk. III Supras and FC RX-7s. These ricers will skip by the WRX for the same reason, they just don't care, they want neon and wings, not performance. They'd rather get a cheaper car and spend the extra money making it a shiny piece of crap.
