ICE! Yuck :-( Almost got my car...
#16
Here is what I remember form school. I dont know how they figured this out. "Ice is twice as slippery at 32 degrees F as it is at 0 degrees F" So for all the guys talking about perma frost (which by the way does not thaw in the summer, hence "perma") That is easy to drive on because its so cold...
The best thing that I can say is just be aware of the temps and the conditions and know the limits of the car.
I also live in PA , pocono mountains

As far as driving in the Snow or ice remember this... Dont Panic!! You can go to an empty parking lot and practice but realize what your are there to do. You can practice and have fun BUT if you are just having fun you wont pay attention to what you doing, learning wise. I went to an empty Parking lot when it was 6 inches of snow and when they plowed it so the surface was a little slippery. Try this when your practicing... If you perform a Fient Drift in the snow then hold the drift in a "U" shape, then do it again but making a figure 8 you will understand the car alot more. Whats nice is that you can Drift the WRX in the snow without using the brakes or E-brake. When in the Drift SLIGHTLY turn the wheel in the direction in which you want to go and adjust the throttle to continue the slide. If you want to perform a S drift then do the same as above but when you decide to do in the other direction let off the gas and steer in the dirrection you want and press the throttle again.
Learn to control the gas and DO NOT OVER CORRECT TOO MUCH. If you over correct too much the car will go wild once it gains traction but if you slightly turn the wheel you will control the direction much more effectively
I stayed in the Parking lot for about an hour doing Drifts and car control techniques. What I did is all from watching vids and reading, so my technique is not all correct in a Pros eyes... I am a novice with the WRX but I have pretty good driving knowledge and exp.
If you dont like my .02 then take this

Nice! Thanks for the little how to :-) Now I just gotta find a parking lot where a cop is not going to say "stop driving like an idiot or I will give you a sitation if I see you a"gain...lol
I don't think I paniced, but to be honest it all happend so fast I can't really remember other than trying to fix the car mulitple times so I didn't face going to a ditch or what have you... then stepping on the brake and then HOLDING it in and holding the steering wheel and saying the F word until I came to a stop and a thud...lol I was more worried about someone else that could have been near me and my car... didn't really care what happend to me... :-p

the best thing ive read so far in this thread... dont be abrubt. its very very true . any major input is just going to add to the situation for the most part.
if you really want to improve your winter driving, get snow tires (nokian hakka q's for the extreme, michelin artic alpin for good snow traction, but w/o loosing too much dry performance), then look around for an ice trials in your area. its like auto-x on ice. depending on how the tracks setup we get up to 55-65mph. awesome fun.
