i-Club Project GM8 2.5RS
Just a little teaser here of our new project car. A 98 2.5rs coupe. The idea behind the project is to make a very capable track car (that can drive on the street) for 10k. We picked up this 98 example for very cheap with plenty to spend in the budget. Plans are for either a wrx or STI swap of some sort. Suggestions welcome. We already have a V5 bumper, lip, and rear wing for the car.

For 10k, skip the swap. Everybody and their mother is doing it and frankly, the RS has enough power to be an enjoyable track car with bolt-ons and cams. Spend the big money on sweet coilovers, Stoptechs and forged wheels! And don't forget the seats, cage, and harnesses...

Well you do make a good point, we are looking to the future, and I think the body style and swaps are going to be very big very soon. That and we want ti to be as fast as possible (in all ways) for the money. Maybe a later project, we can do a serious NA build. We do intend to have some nice suspension and brakes, but a balance of all. For 10k, we will have a car that will put a beating on most high ends not to mention evos and stis.
We want to be budget back for the buck minded so we are looking out for deals. We are also doing all the labor ourselves (documented). The suspension and engine are going to be the larger expendatures. The car was purchased for $2300 leaving us 7700 to spend. For brakes, we could do anything from the unbranded 22b ones to newer STI. We just have to look for the deal. Supspension will be something nice and we already have some possibilities. The new bumper and wing were picked up for an unbelieveably cheap price.

Kevin M has a good point in swaps' popularity, but some things happen for good reason. I admire a good N/A build, but this was a car built for turbocharging. The 2.5RS was just a placebo -- it primed the North American market for the WRX, which sold like mad its first year. And now Subaru is a force to be reckoned with, in the sport compact market.
So, forward progress, I say!! Engine swaps are good things. I'm saving up for a USDM EJ205, personally. OBD-II compliant, relatively plentiful, not super expensive, and my OE tranny will work with it for a while until I can afford a better one.
