I live about 5 minutes from Boston and I couldn't agree with you more.
Anyways, a couple of times Ive actually tried driving really good to see the kind of gas mileage I could get and its really encouraging to me that my car was actually good on gas but I love mashing the gas so that didnt last long. Everytime I've driven well Ive gotten over 265 miles on the tank. I didnt go over 2500 rpm unless I was on the Highway and when I was on the Highway I did no more than 65 mph. The last time I did it I actually checked to make sure my tire pressure was right and after I fixed it I got the best mileage Ive ever had. So dont forget to check the tire pressure.

I rarely snake traffic but if I am going to I always use my signal and I never slow others down, I accelerate fast enough to not get in their way. The worst ever is when people are coming onto the freeway and the lane ends and there is a merge left and people decide not to do a "One-to-one" merge with other cars (one car on the freeway goes, one car getting on the freeway goes behind and so on). The jerks who decide they are going to go around a car merging and wait till the last second to merge **** me off like nothing else. They slow everything down all over again. So don't do that stuff either!
In review: Don't slow other people down!

While I'm at it...
If I'm in the left lane and someone behind me wants to go faster than me, I move to the adjacent right lane. If I want to resume my previous speed, I hop back over to the left lane. Keep a nice flow to traffic this way Don't "force" people to have to speed through the slow lanes.
Having taken a trip to England and seen how their freeways work was an inspiration. People in the fast lane go Way Freakin' Fast (tm), and the speeds cascade down to the slow lane. It makes so much sense.

Actually if you cruise in gear (foot off the gas) you aren't burning any gas because you aren't pumping any fuel. If you leave it in N then you are pumping fuel cause of your idle setting.

I have been doing a Milage test for the pass 5-6 months. I get 20+mpg all the time now. I dont drive like a nanny by all means but I dont drive like a bat outta hell all the time. I drive in both the City and Highway. I also heel-toe and blip-downshifts.
** Dont press on the throttle hard to pick up speed. The boost is throttle sensitive so if you floor it the boost will come on. (you can be at 6krpm and boost will not come on depending on throttle position.
** Shift no higher than 4krpm.
** try to avoid multi shifts in traffic and just keep it in one gear (2nd) most of the time.
** cruise on the highway no more than 80mph in 5th gear
I got 25mpg cruising at 85mph with some chases to 100mph and above.
just my .02
