High speed runs bad 4 WRX
The other night on a long and straight and Nobody around safe road. I did a top end run up to 130. As i started to slow I thought about the intercooler. Would it be hot after a long boost at top speed. I came to a stop. Popped the hood and WHOLLY COW!!!!
there was stuff glowing cherry red all over!!!! That can't be good?
That was for about an 45-55 sec run mayby longer. What if it had been for 4 or 5 minutes would it handle it? What would give up first if at all?

Not true, stock WRX doesnt need to be cooled down. First of, lots of stuff glows on turbo cars, thats normal (if you had a camera in the engine bay when you were actually at redline or so the turbo would be glowing bright orange, almost white). As far as the cooldown goes, the stock turbo has a water jacket around the bearing. The way this water jacket is designed is that when the motor is turned of, it siphons water through itself. Pretty much what happens is the water thats left in the water jacket heats up and starts to boil, which flows up into the top of the radiator, and into the reserve, so cool water flows into the jacket to replace this, which heats up and rises, and so on until the turbo bearing is cooled down to a point where it no longer heats the water in the jacket (IE alot cooler than it would have to be to cook the oil). It doesnt sound like much, but this siphon effect is plenty to stop the oil from coking, as aslong as there is water flowing through the jacket the bearing wont get hot enough to coke the oil. It doesnt really matter if the turbo housing is glowing red, or the headers are, the bearing is the only thing that you have to worry about as far as cooldown, and subaru addresse that with the WRX, which is why it doesnt mention cooldown in the manual (like the older WRXs, the ones that werent sold in the US). As long as you have one of the 2002 up WRXs cooldown isnt neccesary.

DO you have any mods? I think the cure to your problem(assuming you don't have nay mods) would be an highflow turboback exhuast+upipe, and an STI hoodscoop. I have those mods plus others on my car with stock turbo and I never see my turbo glow even after hard runs etc. I have checked. I have no heat sheild on my exhuast housing so I can check it out easily. Anyway I think you should work on getting rid of some of the backpressure which should reduce the heat in the turbo.. The STI scoop will keep a good flow of cool air over the IC at high speeds.

I just put a StI hood scoop on, K&N panel filter no silencer. And i ordered a Iclub Stock up-pipe from JDM no cat. But with heat shields to look stock.
Thats about it.
And about hooligan. Just ignore kids like that. Showing them some time posting is what they want.

Cool Zman, so you already have the scoop, and your getting the upipe as well.. those are both great mods. Then just take care of the rest of the exhuast and I think your glowing turbo problems will subside. It's sort of normal for it to glow sometimes I would think since it does geet very very hot, however I havn't seen my exhuast housing glow since I've installed my catless turboback, which is why I think it will do the same for you.

one other thing
If you're gonna be gunnin it like that, I'd suggest getting a radar detector if you don't already have one. Trust me, its worth the investment. Also, some good aftermarket brakes might be a good idea if the detector should go off.

If you drive a lot in the city, yes many false alarms. If you drive on the highway, there are still some false alarms but much less common. Furthermore, it's easier to distinguish false alarms from the real deal b/c of the type of radar the cops use nowadays. It's not fool proof but if you use it correctly, it saves a lot of points on your license. I've made several (15+ times) trips from Portland to LA and vice versa on the I-5 in record time without recieving one ticket...knock on wood.

At 130+ mph your going to approaching the cop so quickly that an radar detector can't do much good IMO. I used to like mine because it would go off when the cop would tag other cars in front of me, but that shouldn't help you if your going over 100mph because you shouldn't do it with other cars on the highway. My detector used to go off all teh time in the city, and by grocery stores/banks etc.. The only one I would buy now is the Valentine One, but I'm not going to spend $300 for it..
