Hard time selling my WRX, any thoughts?
Any idea where I can advertise my modified 02 WRX and get results? Got around $35,000 into it, and I am trying to get $22,500. Am I trying to get to much? Put it on E-bay and other places got an offer of $16,600. ...yeah rite I'll bring it back stock
and sell it before selling it for that price.

I agree......it's hard to find someone who's willing to buy a car for more because of aftermarket parts. The general consensus is that the car will have been ragged on. I'd strip it down and sell it stock.......you'll probably get about the same for it.

Yup, you'll never get the money out of it that you put into it. Put it back to stock and sell parts. It will be more hassle but you'll get more of your money back.

the only way to get any of that mod money back is to put it back to stock. people pay more for stock cars than modified ones because they feel its in better condition. plus then you can go sell all your parts and make more money. only problem is the time it takes to pull everything off and sell it.

I say put it back to stock. By the way what do you have, may be interested in parts. Seriously, You might wnat to wait for car show weather. Go to the shows with the for sale sign in it. Don't list parts, just say serious offers only and give them your cell(if you have one). If your still at the show you could show them the car. I wouldn't let em drive it though unless they put some cash down. All of this assuming you can wait of course.

I'll try to answer the original question from my point of view, as I would be a potential buyer this summer.
People beat on sports cars, and everyone knows it. Whether it's true or not, I will not believe anyone that says they put $$ into improving performance and didn't beat on their car to a point. It's also a fact that boosting up the power shortens the life of various parts. There is also always the question of why someone is selling their car. In your case, you've put $35k into a car that is 2 years old and are selling it... Nothing but red flags to me. Hence, I'd pay LESS for a highly modified car than a bone stock car, all else being equal, and assume crap is going to break.
Now, consider the fact that I can buy a BRAND NEW '04 WRX for around $22k ($1,000+ BELOW dealer invoice) + tax/tag/title. So for me personally you would need to be in the $16k range AND have the car run and drive great AND have a mechanic give it a thorough inspection before I'd even consider it.
Please don't be insulted or take it personally. It's just a simple fact that for the most part, mod'ing cars, especially newer ones, lowers thier value. At best you can only hope to get stock value (with the occasional exception). Trust me, in the last 2 years I've modded then sold an LT-1 Trans Am, Turbo AWD Talon, Jeep Grand Cherokee (modded for offroad, not a street jeep), and currently drive a slightly modified Wrangler. I didn't get my mod money back on any of them, and doubt I could sell my Wrangler for anymore than a stocker would go for.

That is a good point, but. Let me answer that from another potential buyers standpoint. First, i know that if i buy a used wrx or any "sports car" for that matter wheather it's been modded or not it probably has been beaten just a little.Second, he may find a buyer that does not want to spend the energy modding his own car. Third, depending on the level of mods, there may be an a dvantage to buying this over a new wrx. If your going to mod anyway you don't care about a warranty and if the mileage was right, around 20k may be reasonable. It' all perspective. An 02' may be cheaper on insurance, and plates than an 04'. There are all kinds of variables. I think that if he takes it to a show. Where there are all kinds of people wishing they had a cooler car he may be able to sell it as is. I do agree that the moding money is gone but if he can get close to his atrget price things are always negoitable. Also, "right on" about the ebay thing. Good luck and i will check out you goodies. After typing this i just realized, Your going back to stock if your selling everything so i guess i wasted my time. I had a long day!

I guess alot of people might think along the lines of "skeptic" and that thinking probably has some merit, but in my case it
doesn't. I did the mods to my car totally for function, and I must say the WRX has been my favorite car of all time (after having built about 35 different cars). I like pushing the car through turns and kicking high end cars butts on the highway, but it was
NEVER drag raced or auto crossed..the car got Mobil 1 every thousand miles and special synthetic lubes for the gear box and rear and it sits in a garage for the winter. The only reason I am getting rid of it is because of the letters STI. I want a little more top end snap than my stage 4 WRX can deliver and the STI will
do that when I'm done with it.

Well, it's been said that a car (or anything for that matter) is only worth what someone will pay for it. You can calculate your cost or look at Blue Book values all day, but if nobody wants your car, it's worthless. I agree that you should wait until car show time and sell it there. I mean, you know the feeling you get when you leave a car show and you wish you had a car like the ones you just saw. Eventually you'll hook someone, just be patient. There's an a$$ for every seat. If that doesn't work, take it back to stock.

wrx10404 - I agree with you, with one exception. Even if I was planning to mod the hell out of a car I would still prefer to buy one that is basically stock and mod it myself (for way more money in the long run I'm sure). Afterall, I want to be the one abusing my car and shortening it's life, not the previous owner.
The_Kraken has the only correct answer. It's worth EXACTLY what someone else is willing to pay. End of story.
