Going to buy a new 2004?
Join Costco first and use their Auto Sales dept to hook you up with a dealer.
They have a pre-arranged, no-haggle price set with each dealership they contract with (every dealer will have a different setup).
I bought a WRX two weeks ago. Went online through Costco (you have to eventually give a member #), went to the dealer, he showed me his invoice for the car, and that was the deal. Straight invoice and 3.85% financing. Options were at dealer cost; just picked a spoiler and an alarm.
I saved $3k off the MSRP (w/options I wanted). A friend of my bought a Ford truck through Costco and saved SIX thousand off the MSRP (uhh, *markup*!). He got 0.9% interest. Several of his other friends have good experiences too.
If you can somehow haggle and deal to get UNDER invoice, go for it. But I liked just walking in and having the deal arranged, and we both won.

While I don't doubt the ease of doing so, there's no reason to join any type of club solely to save money on buying a car. E-mail a few dealers in your area and they'll be climbing over each other to sell you a car at invoice (not the STi, I know). That was my approach.

Go up one level for the premium package and other models.

Yeah, don't think it would be too difficult to get dealer invoice cost for a WRX by visiting a few dealerships without the Costco thing (although it would be a nice Ace up your sleeve as a backup)...I was looking at the end of 2002 at saving $$$ on leftovers and the dealer I bought from offered me invoice cost on a 2003 over the phone. I couldn't believe he gave me a quote over the phone because most other dealers want you to "stop by to talk" (so they can play games with you). I was so amazed by his honesty that I went to see the car the next day and bought it on the spot...
