my car varies a lot too. on a hard, high boost, drive i can get as low as 14mpg. i thought something was wrong, so i avoided building any boost over 3psi and my mpg jumped to 22. i just got my car tuned, so my gas mileage will change again once i lay off the power. don't feel bad, i have had as low as 68mpg at half a tank! i must have a 2 ton foot or something.

All values are for when the gas light comes on. I have roughly 2.5-3 gallons left in the tank...

280 for hard daily driving.
310 for normal driving
380-400 for San Francisco to Los Angeles, 5-15mph for the first 100 miles. 85+ all the way down from there. I over the grape vine and almost near the start of the LA basin before the light came on.

One thing people don't do is let they car warm up. Start it and leave it until the needle gets to normal operating temp. You'll know this also when the engine keeps a steady rpm, between 700-800 rpm. If you start your car and start driving, the engine trys much harder to get things moving for a few reasons, which include a cold block and internals and also that engine oil is also very cold, and doesn't let parts move freely. There is extra effort exerted to get those things moving and that eats gasoline.

My stock 2002 WRX Wagon with 21k miles has been really really bad lately too...I managed to get only 210 miles out of 13 gallons. I KNOW I haven't changed my driving habits. What do you guys think this can be attributed to?

I read this thread right before going on vacation, and the whole time driving I was thinking about how my gas milage would be. I got 25.5 mpg after driving for 300 miles going 70 mph plus some miles just on beach roads. i was excited about getting better than 19/20 for once.

Any thoughts about it just being the guage calibration?

My stock 04 WRX Wagon gets about 300-330 miles per tank.

I get about 190-200 miles at the 1/2 tank mark, but only another 100-130 miles for the bottom 1/2 of the tank and then I end up filling it up with about 3-4 gallons still in the tank, because I am not sure how low I am on gas.

I've been thinking that the guage must be poorly calibrated, because my driving style doesn't change that much from day to day to warrant sudden "guzzling" of gas. Besides, less gas = less weight which should mean I should see a marginal increase in fuel economy, not less!

i dont think that margin of gas weight would make any significant amount of better fuel economy

I wouldn't either, except I've been watching a lot of F1 racing coverage, and they have calculated differences as small as a "couple of liters" of fuel being equivalent to a few hundredths of a second per lap... every little bit can matter

1 gallon of gas = 7 lbs... 1/2 tank (almost 8 gallons = 56 lbs)... full tank is 15.9 gallons = 111lbs.

Something is really wrong with the gas gauge. I was at 1/4 tank and only filled up 9.2 gallons. That means there was about 6 gallons left to a 1/4 tank. Thats not possible, considering the tank is a little over 15 gallons total.
