Engine light came on

Engine light came on
I'm normally good about changing my oil but I don't think this is the case as I've only gone 921 miles over ( 3000 ). I religiously have been using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W30.
I don't know what set it off. It just came on as I started my car after I had finished my shift. Both engine light ( solid ) and Cruise control light ( blinking ) were activated. I've 33416 miles. I'm just glad I made it home safely ( drove 65MPH ).
I'm going to change my oil in the morning when I come to.
I've already cleaned the airfilter and waiting for it to dry. I hope this isn't serious.
Thanks

An AP isn't a true OBDII scanner and won't always give accurate results when reading codes.
You can go to Autozone, they do free scans. If you are in CA I think their policy is somewhat different, you may have to leave a deposit and use the scanner yourself.
Alternately you can post in your regional forum (try NASIOC as well) and ask for assistance from someone nearby who has a scanner.
When you get the car scanned, be sure to get the exact code or codes in Pxxxx format. You can then search for threads discussing the particular codes, or if you can't find anything come back here and post them for more assistance.

call up an autozone and see if they have it
then pull the code and see what it is then we can go from there
the late oil change did not cause this
its not in limp mode so its not super seriouls
my guess is misfire

Unfortunately we are super mechanics, so we can't diagnose the check engine light just by knowing there is a check engine light.
1)find out the code
2)what exactly was the situation? What shift had you just finished? how fast were you going? were you babying the throttle or did you turn in the car and get going fast?

Thanks for prompt replies guys
I'm gonna have to do this tomorrow and get the code but I did in fact change the oil. I knew it would still be there in spite of my lack of knowledge in mechanics.
Shift was work related. It came on as soon as i started the car. I drove it home for 26 miles. I drive regular when going to work or any other place ie shifting 3500-4000. When it comes to on ramp I might go at 5-6k. That's about it.

I agree, its not the oil. Subaru actually recommends changing the oil every 7,500 or 3,250 if you drive in certain conditions.....theres more goin on in the engine than your oil.

Yes get it scanned, the code should still be there as long as you haven't disconnected the battery. The light goes out if the problem isn't detected again for a few driving cycles, but you still want to know what turned it on in the first place.
