contributors to gas mileage?
I was wondering, after reading all these posts about the varied range of gas mileage on wrxs, if the way a car is broken in has anything to do with it. some people get 20 mpg on city driving while i get that only on highway driving. i dont get it. my car is as stock as they come. i bought it used and i was wondering if break in period contributes to the gas mileage.

I bought My WRX brand new and broke it in for 3000 miles, I mean babied it for the break in. I get 200 miles per tank for city and I get about 330 miles to the tank on the highway @ 80-90 mph.
I have noticed when I came home from Tenn. I drove a 70-75 And I got 345 miles per tank. Could be just the way your driving.

I did the standard first 1000 miles engine break-in, and I'm getting 21-25 mpg, depending on amount of highway miles. I expect these numbers to go down as summer approaches.

I did a 1,500 mile break-in.
Right now these are my mpg's for the last three months:
All city/work driving: 19.86 MPG
Highway/Commute: 24.766 MPG
I must say that I drive my car pretty hard....as in its never under 3,000 RPM and usually sits about 4,000 RPM.
Only Mods I have are: wheels, tires, borla cat back, IC hoses, suspension, and snorkel-be-gone.

....other contributors could be fuel brand, octane level, fuel blend/additives, driving technique, type of oil used, type of roads driven, etc., etc. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but I don't think you can nail it down to just how the car was broken in.

the thing is i bought mine used and it has almost 40k miles on it and i get bad mileage. i get like 220 miles to the tank and i dont drive hard at all. i get like 270 max if i have a bunch of highway miles. i was just curious cuz i read others get so much better gas mileage that i figured maybe break in has something to do with it and since i wasnt the one who broke my car in that it could be a contributer to my wrx guzzler.

generalWRX, Does your car have a service history? If not my advice would be to perform the 30k mile service immediately. Not only will this help with the longevity of your car but it will also improve gas milage. I get between 24 and 26 mpg in my stock 5spd wagon in mixed driving.

Seriously though, my mileage can change quite a bit from tank to tank (depending how I drive). ....although I don't think I could ever get the #'s some of these people are claiming regardless of what I do.

my first oil change (after about 2000 miles on whatever was in there) just about doubled my gas mileage.
I babied the car until about 6000 and then slowly started driving it more and more aggressively.. today she's got 18k and runs like a champ
