krinkov-- thanks for the kind words and all the advice i will definitely keep that stuff in mind going forward here.

i dont know how reliable the vishnu stuff was and whether or not it was the cause of the engines failure-- after all it did have 140k miles on it, so i guess this was something that i could have seen coming, it was just a surprise because of how seamlessly it had been running prior to failing.
yeah I see the previous owner switched to an ECUtek tune at some point, which is a good thing, but since it originally had a Unichip on it, it does date that stage two back quite a bit, probably to 02-03 since everyone started ditching the unichips for ECUteks back in 04. Like I said though, 140K is a ripe old age for such a setup to live, I know people who've blown bone stock motors with much less mileage. As for sourcing a full EJ25 longblock, those are quite a bit more expensive, and since you cant use AVCS, the stock EJ25 smallport heads arent really any better than just freshening your stock heads and running those. Anyhow, keep us posted, hopefully you have a credit card you dont mind running up for a while

I'd recommend Speed Element in Fremont as well if you are going to shop around for a new engine setup. They built my jdm hybrid engine for a very reasonable labor rate, and they were great at dealing with random insidious problems that came up with a customo build. Speed Element also helped me source all the engine "add-ons" like motor mounts, oem replacement parts, etc.

I'll probably get a lot of flaming for this, but for a budget swap, in the east bay, you should talk to Gruppe-S in Hayward. I know my GF blew the motor on her legacy and they really hooked us up with a good deal on an installed long-block.

Give them a call...

Just an FYI:

All of our shortblocks are inspected, measured, and assembled by a Subaru Senior Master Technician with +12 yrs experience.
All machining work...boring/honing, surfacing, vallve train, etc...is performed by a machine shop with +25yrs experience.

I then assemble each component into longblock configuration in house.
We can built anything from stock to "not so stock".
