If I were you, I'd wrap a bit of tape around any succeptible electrical connections and cover the intake (if you have an open element) with a plastic bag.
There are also engine degreasers that work very very well. They are about $6. It is basically a petroleum based spray that you spray all over your engine compartment. It washes away dirt and grime when you run water over it. The best part is, since it is petroleum, it offers a limited protection against water in electrical connections. Don't expect it to hold out forever though as it is designed to wash away with the water. Any excess will evaporate away. Do not use this on a hot engine - fire hazard.

Engine Cleaning
What I have always done is hose it down with your garden hose, spray some Simple Green in there, start the engine, and hose it off. Don't spray too much, a little goes a long way! I have done this with all my cars, and have never had any problems. I haven't taped any electrical wires, but if you got the time it's not a bad idea at all.

there's a spray called GUNK that works great.
here's a demo on what it can do and how to use it.

No probs here. Better if the car is warm but not super hot. Spray some water first. Spray Simple Green. It even smells kinda lemony?! Then let it sit for a bit. Then hose it down with light pressure spray. Didn't bothered with covering anything. Heck I even scrub some parts to get the grime out. Last winter was a bad ****. Now the engine bay looks just as clean when I first picked the car up 3 years ago!
