Break-in period questions
I just got a new STi and I generally don't go over 4k rpms when I'm driving but I have brought it to 5,500 a few times or so. Is this bad? I thought you just weren't supposed to redline it. The manual says 4k tops. I was curious about what you guys think good break-in procedure includes.

Yea, I've popped it just over 4K a few times and once to 5 K with just over 400 miles on mine. Situations in driving sometimes require it. Last night I pulled a real boner in making a U-turn on a road with a steep grade. I rev'd up too high in first and allowed the clutch to slip to much. I know it got hot cause it smelled pretty bad. Seemed alright this morning but I'm pissed at myself for doing it. I still think 1000 mile break-in is way too long. Most I've ever had to deal with is 500 miles and with most new cars I've owned in the last 10 years there's been no break-in.

Some very knowledgable mechanics believe you should "Break it in like you're going to drive it". I don' t know if this is true or not, but it would certainly be helpful for cars with computers that learn people's driving styles and tune the car accordingly.

yeah, the ecu has self learning mode. But if you reset it it relearns. So after break in disconect your battery and whyen you reconect it your computer will be "dumb" again. Then you can drive as hard as you want and youll get the little bit of extra performance from it.
