The buyeyes were called the bugeyes only because of the headlights. Circular headlights = buyeyes. Otherwise the bugeyes (02-03 model) are the same as the new models except for a few small differences, which haven't really affected the popularity of the WRX.

 

I realize it was just the lights. But what I mean is that the fact they had to restyle it so quick shows it was a bad move.
