Aftermarket wheels voids warranty?
I got my car serviced and they said i need an air filter and wanted to charge me $75 for one. I asked if I got a new one myself would it void warranty? Guy said no. So I asked him about putting aftermarket wheels and he said that if I did it would void the drivetrain warranty. WTf? drivetrain? Any input on this? If this guy was just pulling my chain or what?

A warranty can never be "voided", what can happen is a warranty claim can be denied due to an aftermarket part affecting the broken item on a car.
just because you put a huge turbo on your car, the dealer cannot deny a claim that your power window is broken.
If you put the wrong fitment of wheels on your car and you blow out your wheel bearings then yes, that could be a cause to deny the warranty.

They would somehow need to prove that your wheels caused the issue for the failure of w.e failed. I have aftermarket wheels and springs on my car and my rack and pinion went bad somehow and my dealer fixed it.

Some say that a dealer can "flag" your car. Im not exactly sure. the only thing I can see go wrong on wheel issues is bearings though. unless your " bull *******" and your wheels sticks out 5inches past your fender, but Im sure your not looking to do that. What wheel size are you planning to do?

if you run a 18x9 depending on offset your might have to run the same size as you would on the 18x8. unless you want to roll and possibly pull your fender. but you might be able to get away with a roll. Id say with a pretty flat roll a 235/40-18 should fit. but dont quote me on that I havent tried too much of a aggressive fitment on our cars. I only have a 17x9 +30 with a 235/45-17 All Season tire. I had to roll completely flat to do so too. Ask Imprezard and Papa Bear on what tire size they ran with their 18x9 +35 wheels.

i have a 07 wrx w/ 18x8.5's... i had to stretch the rubber a bit but didn't have to do anything to mine to fit. no rub at all, about a 1cm clearance to the strut in the rear. but you won't have any issues cause they move up and down together. also depends on the offset.
If i were you, i would ask soobydude.com / wheeldude for his advice. he knows all.
tell him exactly what you want/desire and want to avoid, etc...
ohhh... and dealers always try their hardest to not honor warranties... imo, warranties are interest free loans/money directly into the dealer's pockets... 100kmi or 5yr warranties make no sense... because OEMs literally have their engineers design all specs to last ONLY as long as warranties are covered, no longer.... with this said, really, warranties are pointless imho.

thanks for the input guys. I'll check into it some more. I plan on getting my fenders rolled at some point but I'm not too worried about it. I was just worried about the warranty but it seems like just the bearings would not be covered so I'm not too worried about it. Thanks again!

do you already have the rims? i'd go 17x8 or 18x8.5 max but that's just me. basically asking, why do you need 9" wide rims? that's pretty damn wide.
do you go to tahoe a lot? just make sure if/when you roll your fenders, look out for rust, get a coating in there like nail polish clear coat or something.

I don't have the rims just trying to get an idea. I shoulda posted this in that section. One more question. How do i determine what offset would be best? say for some 18x8 or 18x9 what offset would be good?

for a flat roll and no pull on a i believe a 225/40-18 tire on a 18x9 +35 will fit. Lower the number pretty much more the rim pokes out while the higher goes more into the body. So for example your stock is +55 and if you were to go with a +35 that is 20mm difference going out(towards fender) higher the number its going towards the strut. That is my way too look at it.

Oh okay. cool. That helps. Thanks! I will probably go 18x8.5 or 18x9 for my summer rims and 17x8 or 17x8.5 for the winters (more of a sidewall on tires) Thanks for your help.
