95 impreza - what would you do?
i only paid $500 for a 95 impreza
its auto/awd/1.8L - the body is in more or less perfect conidtion but the engine/trans gotta go
i want a turbo but i am leaning towards the NA EJ25 to save money
since its auto and i paid so little for it - im not sure if i should do the conversion to MT - i would defetnyl prefer the MT but im not gonna be picky - i just want this thing to be somewhat fast and work.
1)if i did pick the N/A ej25 - for the time being - would it bolt up to the auto trans i have now? or 98 and older trans ?- since this one has a lot of miles on it?
2) if i did replace the trans/engine - since im taking everything out anyway would it be "that much more work" to make it a mt?
3)any other suggestions
i dont wanna spend $10,000 but alot of the labor can be done myself with friends....

Why stop at the the N/A EJ25?
Why not step up to a used EJ205 and tranny? If you're going to do a swap, you might as well make it worth the effort, no?

The SOHC EJ25 is a great motor, and putting it in the lightest Impreza only makes it better. It will bolt up to your transmission, but you have to use an ECU for an automatic transmission car. It will also take less splicing and wiring work to run the EJ25, whether you use your stock ECU or one that goes with the motor. Turbo motors are mroe difficult to wire- it's easier just to yank out your harnesses and put in the ones from the turbo car. Also, remember that engines like the EG20G are old, and um, well-loved. Don't expect reliability, and don't expect them to pass smog inspections if you have them (some will, some won't, depends where you live). If I were you (and I'm not far off, I have an OBS with a 2.2 and 5-speed) I would find a wrecked Subaru with a single-cam EJ25 and swap as much of the wiring and drivetrain as possible.
