The new corvette was designed with the help of Ferrari... leave it to GM alone and they put out a 30,000lb "sports 18-wheeler" with ads stating that it gets 40mpg city/500,000 highway and then proceed to state that it ranks the same (if not better) in areas such as horsepower, mpg's, etc... as japanese competitiors of vehicles in the same class (though neither Toyota or Honda have such heavy consumer vehicles as 30k lbs).

Performance cars aren't getting heavier?

Nissan 350Z- 3400+ lbs

Mustang GT- 3500+ lbs

Shelby Mustang GT- 3900+ lbs

Dodge Challenger- expected to be near 4000 lbs

Chevy Camaro- expected to be near 4000 lbs (convertible)

Pontiac GTO- 3700+ lbs

Ferrari Maranello- 3800+ lbs

Lamborghini Murcielago- 3800+ lbs

Aston Martin Vantage V8- 3700+ lbs

Ferrari Fiorano- 3700+ lbs

Porsche 997 Turbo- nearly 3500 lbs

Mazda Miata- gaining weight with every generation that passes

Lamborghini Gallardo- 3400+ lbs

Golf GTI- 3300-3400 lbs (last generation 1.8T was around 3100 lbs)

These are all well-engineered vehicles. It's not a matter of poor engineering and designing. Safety contraints are getting tighter and tighter, causing companies to dump in extra weight- side air bags, airbags that come out of the seats, curtain air bags, thicker bumpers, more crush zones, etc.

You think that Nissan's GTR is going to be light? Dude, that thing's gonna weigh over 3600 lbs! The R34 weighed over 3600 lbs. This "new" GTR looks twice as hefty as the R34.

Look at the classic American Muscle Cars. The '62-'65 Chevy Nova weighed about 2600-2700 lbs, while the '68-'74 models weighed about 3100 lbs. Fox-body Mustangs, while not classics, weighed around 3100 lbs. With the '94-'98 models they porked out to nearly 3400 lbs. The current generations weigh over 3500 lbs! A classic Camaro weighed next to nothing. Why do you think these cars were so quick? They were light and had a lot of horsepower. Here's an eye-opener for you. A Road Runner (as large as they are) only weighed about 3400 lbs.

That's not even touching on the current Corvette. Look at the price of it. That car costs around $45,000. It is a HALO car. GM is trying to build a "911 killer" and undercut the competition by thousands, and while not "killing" the 911, they're sure as hell keeping up with it. If the Corvette were anything but a "halo" car, it wouldn't be receiving so much attention to cut weight, add performance, and add safety all at the same time. When you pile weight on some place, you have to remove it in another. Weight savings costs money.

I dont know if anyone has already posted this.... but what the "F" is subaru thinking? WHY? I'm heated!!!! This car Sucks! This is the 2008 impreza, a.k.a. the volkswagen killer.... Honestly why would subaru want to lose such a large market for the wrx... correct me if i'm wrong- I hope I am...

You just proved my point in this paragraph. The last sentance says it all. The new GTR is going to weigh 3500+ and you're going to spend more then a vette? Screw that.

TAHT is a turbo hybrid concept from the 2005 tokyo auto show. It's called the B5-TPH (turbo parallel hybrid). It's NOT an impreza.
