Thumbs down 2007 STI oil consumption. compression + leakdown test results

I purchased a 07 STi @ 25,990 miles

26,500 - oil check fine

27,500 - checked oil level = sitton on "L" on dipstick! LOW!! added 2 quarts to "F"

28,500 - oil level 3/4 full. Could use an extra quart to top off

====
Mods: SPT intake + SPT catback - both installed prior to be purchasing car at dealership, grounding kit.
====

So i called the dealership to talk to them about this issue. They told me the STi burning 1 quart every 1,000 miles is Normal? So im off to dealership tomorrow since im still under my 30k warranty to do an "oil consumption test".

Test: they change my oil + filter, and have me come back every 1k miles to document how much oil i am using.

Results? We'll see. Ill keep you guys updated.

Edit: 11/30 I have a just purchased a Cobb AP, but due to oil consumption, i am installing after everything clears up with oil consumption test. No point installing my AP, then SOA blaming the AP to void my warranty! (I purchased the car used from the dealershiop 7/2010 so i still have full 3 yr warranty). If all check out, i will install my Cobb AP!!

=========
=========
UPDATE:
8/28/10 1,000 mile oil check - the car burnt 1 quart. It is now at the "F" mark. I suspect it burnt more because when they initially did my oil change, it looked overfilled a little bit, the oil level was on the top indentation on the dipstick above the "F"

11/30/10
Oil consumption test finished - Engine burnt 1.1 -1.2 qt per 1000 miles. At first they did NOT want to do a leak town + compression test because it was still within spec of burning 1 qt/1000 miles. I argued with them saying technically it is over 1 qt/1k miles. Dealership mechanic refused to do it. SO i called SOA. My reason is that the car is borderline acceptable for burning oil per OEM guidelines. 1 month later, SOA calls me back and approves the leakdown + consumption test. Will schedule tomorrow to see what my results are.

12/1/10
Compression test Results
Dry
#1 - 110
#2 - 100
#3 - 110
#4 - 100

Wet
#1 - 110
#2 - 110
#3 - 110
#4 - 100

Leak down test

#1 - 2%
#2 - 8%
#3 - 4%
#4 - 6%

What they said: They are a little worried about cylinder #4. They said test results came out "borderline". They are unsure what actions to take next, so they will submit the data to SOA to see what they say

What do you guys think? I was hoping the compression numbers would be a HAIR higher, but still acceptable? Leak down tests look ok to me as well? My goal is to put the AP, but needed a compression test + leak down to make sure my engine is in good sounding shape. So what do you guys think? Im still waiting to hear from SOA, maybe in another 1-2 weeks.

Edit 12/1/10
According to the factory specs, my compression is suspose to be 142-170 psi, and no difference than 7psi per cylinder. Since my compressions are 110,100,110,100.

1) I am already under spec of the compression psi numbers

2) they are more of 7 psi difference per cylinder

So, doesn't sound too good in my situation? Glad im still under warranty. Interesed to see what SOA will do for me?

12/9/10
SOA approves engine teardown!

12/30/10

Dropped car off to dealership

1/4/111

Results: Time for a NEW shortblock for my motor!!! Results of motor teardown from dealership: #2 + #4 cylinders have broken ring lands and scoring on both cylinder walls, hot spots on both pistons. Yay for new motor!! Yay for dealership warranty!!!!

Also, they said my clutch had hot spots, will replace for no additional labor! So i might take this opportunity to upgrade my clutch as well ;-)? hmm ^_^

Scored piston wall - hard to tell, but one is where the line is coming down middle of cylinder wall. Hard to take a picture of, needed to be in right angle + light

Nothing new with the 07 pos Sti. I do t think I know a person that has had a 07 Sti hit 50k plus miles without going boom

Bump for a free engine though!! How call eqtuning and get that baby tuned!!

The 07 OEM pistons are more of a concern than the tune.

Hey paul, they said they will give me a new short block. I remember you mentioned that the newer short blocks have a better crank? How will i know if i have it? Would i still have the crappy new 07 pistons as well?

Your car will explode when it hits 60k.

07 WRX's have a slightly different piston design, but suffer from the same issues. Everything after the second half of 06 has been hit or miss.

All the new shortblocks come with the new nitrided cranks, but they'll still have the same crappy pistons.

They ALL have the nitirided crankshaft.
The pistons are now different/slightly better than your OG pistons.

This sounds exactly like my disaster. They put in new motor, with an out-of-round piston in cylinder 1, then wouldn't replace the block, and I have been dealing with the BS ever since. I go through 2 quarts every 1K miles. Be careful, and GOOD LUCK!
