2002 WRX Wagon with 34,000 miles, questions
There is a local lady here who has a 2002 WRX Wagon for sale. Its not exactly low milage with 34,000 miles. Edmunds puts TMV at $14,275 private party and $16,035 dealer retail. Does that sound about right and what would be a fair offer for both parties?
Second question. Should I be at all concerned with buying a WRX with 34,000 miles? Everything I read says that the cars should last a very long time if properly maintained. What questions should I ask her other than the typical stuff? I mean what are the services that should have been performed that I should try to see if she has documentation to prove they were done.
She did say once she hit a curb and scratched the under right side of the door. This concerns me because of alignment. She said she hit it going very slowly in a parking lot and the car drives perfectly straight. I have not seen the car yet but plan to.
Any advice as to what I should look for and ask is appreciated. I did see pictures of it. The intercooler looked like rocks have pushed in the screen all over. Is that normal, does it need to be addressed?
Thanks,
Kenny

A little over $14K sounds good. I'm not really big on female drivers (flame suit on), but it's better than buying the car from some teenager. Little dings on the intercooler fins are normal. I would just look to see if the car was brought in for all the scheduled service. The powertrain warranty should be transferable.

Used cars are a tough call. On the one hand, you're paying just a little over half of what I paid for my new car, which is almost exactly the same at this point...'02 wagon with 31K. On the other hand, you never know how a person has treated and maintained their vehicle whereas I know everything about how my car has been driven and maintained.
Maintenance records are a must. But you also have to use a "sixth sense". Size up the original driver. Have her take you for a ride in the car and see if she constantly lugs the car or does not let it warm up. Is she talking about how fast it goes? Is her radio set to NPR or metal? You sort of have to get comfortable with you instincts.
34K miles is not that many for a modern, Japanese car.

So 34k is not much even for a turbo charged car? Will the turbo charged car be expensive to maintain in the future? I would assume yes but Subaru has been putting turbos on cars for a long time and I have seen legacy wagons with well over 100k miles...

The EJ20t is as reliable as any other motor when left stock. The advice above is good- have her give you an extended demo, with her driving, so you can listen for out of place sounds and see if she does anything obviously wrong. If it's been serviced, it seems like a pretty good deal for $12-13,000. Also, if you snag it soon, you'll be able to get it fully inspected by a dealer, who will try very hard to find things they can replace under the warranty.
