I know this is a bit of an old thread, but I think the reason this happens is the pressure difference in the cabin, the gap between the slider and glass, and the glass between the atmosphere.
So essentially, in my mind, hot air rises up, while cold air goes down, correct? So, While hot air rises towards the roof, the air either flows back into the system to create more heat, while some hot air escapes up through the fabric of the roof. Due to this, the heat transfers into the gap between the plastic slider, and the glass. This inturn creates, basically a "bomb", and evenutally gives out. What may be helping this too is the amount of sound deadening materials used in modern cars. So that may explain the upward shattering of the glass.
