Unhappy *need Help*

I've been searching for a white sti for about a month now. There are only two Subaru dealers around me. First one I went to was really bad service. (Richard Lucas on RT. 1 NJ) Second one was on RT 46, it was Chrysler/Subaru dealer. My salesperson was a MRS. around my mom's age. Oh yea, I also had 02 Civic Si to trade in at this time. We started talking and she says how much I want for my car. I said I want 13500 to 14000 for the car. I knew that it wasn't gonna be anywhere near that price. She offers me 11000 for my car. I said I will take it if I get lot of discounts on the STI. After little discussion we went for a test drive. After the test drive she says that she will give me the STI for 32,165 and I simply said no. She asks me what can she do to make me sign a deal and I said monthly payment under 400 dollars. She says ok. I felt like smacking myself for saying that. On the Civic SI i have 11000 to pay off and they are gonna give me 12200 for it. The Sti, I am getting it for 30165. This is where it gets weird. General sales manager comes to talk to me. He subtracts 12200 from 30165 and gets 17965. He says that is all I have to pay for the STI. So I asked him what about the money I owe on the Civic and he says he'll take care of that. I was thinking what is going on. So this guy is paying off my civic and still subtracting the trade in price from the STI price? It was too good to be true. There had to be something behind this. So I asked him once more and he said the exactly the same thing. So I left the dealer leaving the 500 deposit for the price we talked about and getting it signed by him. Even though I am really happy right now, little nervous about the whole thing. Any recommendation to what this manager is thinking?

uhh..careful, man, it looks like you're about to learn a hard lesson in dealership bs.

you said "I want payments < $400/mo".

What they'll likely do then, is pay off your current loan, then finance the STi at $30,165 at the highest rate they can to still keep the payments under $400. Your loan will likely be 6 years, maybe even 7.

Go here: Edmunds.com (Car buyers advice)

Scroll down to Buying Tips and check out the 10 steps to buying a new car article, then read confessions of a car salesman. The latter article will tell you exactly what they're about to do to you (IE: build in mega profit at your expense).

Good luck.

oh, also, you can check out the edmunds.com calculators. Check out TMV (true market value) - it will give you a good idea of what you *should* be paying for your car in your area.
