widest tire that will fit on an STI....
After looking at the JUN WRx in SUPER STREET magazine I was trying to figure, 245 or 255 on 18 inch, of course with lips rolled.
OPINIONS PLEASE !!!!
944TURBO GUY
I know the JUN car has 265-18's , but those fenders are seriously rolled, pushed and stretched, I dont want to go that far, just some mild rolling, to try and fit a 245/35-18 D.O.T. race rubber.
Yes, it'll be sprung very well,.........Prodrive makes a new rim that looks similar to the P1, except the lugs are recessed alot more, its a replica of the Ferrari Prodrive 550 GT racecar rim. 18X8 inch.

hey
245-255 on 17x8.5 should work w/out to much modifying. to do what jun did, you will as you said need some fender pulling. even then, the wheel travel will need to be reduced(lower bumpstops). wheel/tire combos that big are known to hit the inner fender unless you do some major interior fender work.

Fitment issues,.....
Sorry guys, the one thing I left out was that I am going 18inch because I am upgrading the brakes to AP 6 piston, with a 14.5 inch rotor. This combo wont fit inside a 17 inch.
So it looks like I will have to do some fender work.( without getting into a "brake argument" about why I dont NEED brakes that big) .
So the jist of what I'm getting is that even with a 245 you need to modify the fender?

What kind of competition/track work do you plan on doing? .. and is it an existing brake kit you are looking at ... or are you planning to fabricate mounts/hats?
Curious b/c I have not looked at brakes yet, but plan on upgrading as the car will see lots of track time. I have been patiently holding out for Brembo to release Carbon Ceramic Composite aftermarket kits ... which they have been promising for some time now .. at only an incremental cost over current kits ... not the silly prices of a GT2 kit .. I'm guessing the kit will be priced around $4k... but just speculation.

almost all the tuners in japan use 17's. they seem to be able to get enough braking from whatever they use with 17s. i know the jun car runs 18's, but that thing is ludicrous. not sure if you have the Impreza magazine that comes from japan, but there are tuners turning insanely fast lap times with 17s and 6 pot brakes.
one of the faser cars is the Zero Sport GDA. they use there own coilovers, and 17x9.5 advan RC II's. I think they use 255 yoko race rubber. but the fenders have been gutted, and cut to the edges. they also of course have 22mm front sway bar, 24mm rear, and all the bushings are STi.
anyhow, i am not sure what brakes you are goin for, but 18's on a wrx seems counter productive sometimes. but if you are trying to go for a car like the jun, than it is a moot point. that car must have about 1" of travel suspension wise, which is not why i would get the STi. i like the long travel suspension myself.
please let us know what you settle on parts wise. i am looking forward to seeing your car whe it is done.

I have also been curious about wheel/tire sizes. So, the consensus is that 18x 8.5 won't fit, but 17x8.5 will fit? The most important thing to me was the width. It would be nice to get to 18s (for looks), but if there are serious modifications needed, then I can easily scrap that.
How wide 18s would fit? If at all?

In general, you drop down in tire size as the rim diameter increases to keep the rolling radius unchanged e.g. 17" would run on 225/45s and 18" would run on 225/40s......in both cases the relationship of the wheel/tire to the wheelarch would be unchanged.....if one cleared, they would both probably clear.
However, be very careful in selecting aftermarket wheels.......you need to ensure they will clear the Brembos.

My plans....
For the record, I am selling my 944 turbo racecar, that has 18x11 rear, with a 315-30-18 Pirelli D5 slick and 18x10 front with a 305-D4 slick, I run W6 wet slicks. All this I managed to fit under the stock fenders with alot of modifications. the car weighs 2350 and makes 385-400 hp @ the wheels.Track only car with Motons and Motec engine management. Max Crawford rear wing, Recaro Spg, Kelly Moss engine,..point is I have built racecars, and have now entertained the thought of building a "Jun" type car.
I am buying an STi for a daily driver and keeping my 03 WRx and maybe building a SCCA ITE or GT2 car, but it(2003 WRX) will start out as a 350hp 2800lb STREET-track car that I can drive to the track to instruct for drivers ed events, this will progress into a "trailer it" only car and be modified into ,..maybe a SPEED WORLD challenge car(GT) . BUT,...all this will depend on how fast a stock STI goes around my home track,..because, with 300ft lbs or torque and decent brakes, that lap time will tell a certain story.
I regularly run with a particular Speedvision team when they test there and can measure success from the lap times.
As for the brake kit,(the fronts 14.5 inch six piston AP are $ 4500.00 and rears, 13inch AP 4 piston calipers)$2800.00.
I run this setup on my racecar and other racecars I've built and it stops from 160 mph at the 175ft mark down to 40 mph for turn one at Summit Point,.so will I have brake over kill,..yes sir,..but the class I'll be in will have stupid power, and I'll have 4 wheel drive and stupid brakes.
Do I have to run 18inch,??? obviously no !! Do I want to,.?? yes, and so while I know this may turn into a $ 75k project, the two things I dont want to spend money on twice is brakes, and wheels. I will most likely go with a fikse or BBS racewheel for the racecar. If my fiance keeps the 03-WRX, then I will buy a Group N tub, to start the project.
Sooooooo,..this is why I am asking all the seemingly stupid, out of place questions about "fenders"..
Josh, thanks for the advise on the fender mods needed, I do need more info and pictures on some of the Japaneese magazines for the details.thanks for everyones help and opinions.

Coming from a 1700 lb Lotus Exige .. I can fully respect the notion that you can never have big enough brakes or too little weight
What's funny is that just yesterday I posted on the Supra forum that I was aiming for 350-370 whp and about 2800lbs. We'll have to keep in touch.
I come from a rallying background .. just been doin lots of track time lately ... so my thinking is kind of skewed in that regard.
I'm planning on going with a full group N spec prep minus the power limits and plus quite a few other bits that could be reversed later if need be .. but seamwelded with a spec cage, fuel cell, etc.
The advantage being that rally cars remain streetable and, if tarmac prepped, are a joy at the track.

Lap time @Summit.
Last laptime before the Kelly Moss engine was a 1:20.2 on Hoosiers, with Big Reds and Hawk blue pads. Looking for much better with the AP's and slicks.
And yourself?

I think Dad ran a 1:17in his Viper but it may have been lower. I've run 1:22 in a grand-am cup Integra Type R.
