I have been advised by our Technical Services Department that the pistons in the STi engine are forged steel. The conrods and crank are forged aluminum.

The Car Connection article quotes, "The pistons beneath those valves are made of forged aluminum alloy, while the connecting rods that move the pistons are made from forged, high carbon steel."
Somebody got it wrong, but with the two similar answers, it also seems like one of these descriptions is right.

I just got this from SOA:
Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site and for your inquiry. The 2004 WRX STi is equipped with forged steel pistons and forged aluminum conrods and crank. It is also equipped with sodium filled exhuast valves.
I don't know about the forged aluminum crank, that makes me nervous. Anyone Mechanical Engineers with some insight.

Obviously, the Subaru tech guy is wrong.
My reasons:
1. Forged steel pistons? no way... THEY DONT MAKE STEEL PISTONS.
2. Forged aluminum conrods and crank? Dont think so either.
Obviously, Subaru is telling people what they want to hear.
Deffinately not steel pistons and aluminum conrods and crank, but most likely the other way around.

The subaru guy had it backwards. Talked to my salesman at Huffines and he said it has coated forged aluminum pistons, and forged steel crank. Sorry about the mistake.
