think about it....this STI seems like such a good deal, this and that, but it's still a friggin' SUBARU!!! You are not going to pay anything close to 40k for it, or you'd drive it in shame! If you paid 40k you would think about the new Mcoupe or Corvette that you could have bought for 10% more. Maybe the performance will be satisfying, but as far as the marque goes (wait till girls ask why you paid so much for a subaru) it is a bit behind the competition.
Plus, as far as cost of ownership goes, think of the depreciation, WRX's have dropped more than the average in depreciation from what I have seen. So this STI, if priced more than 32k, could prove to be an expensive car (depreciation and competitors considered).
I don't think that there is any reason why the car shouldn't be 32k or below, it is a sub-compact !!! Needless to say at 30-32k this car is one of the greatest deals around... let's hope that the insurance industry doesn't assign ridiculous rates.

StiStiSti: Do you realize what you said? Or is that what you meant to said? Hehe! I'm confused
SOULFLY: It really doesn't make a damn bit of difference what manufacturer it is made by. If it's in high demand, then the prices can be raised and that's that. Depreciation on Subaru's in general is bad, but Sti is a Limited Edition model. Do you think a 22b depreciated much? Hell no!

It will MSRP for 31-32K. They are only making 4000 units as of now. And there will be four color options...Red, Blue, Black, and White.

SOULFLY, Go back to the Honda or DSM boards, and talk your trash. You cant touch a new Vette for less than $50K and the M coupe? is $52k. $20+k sure aint 10%more than $32k.
By the way go to Kelly Blue Book and you will find that the WRX depreciated less than your dads Honda by percentage. I wont even tell you how bad the Lancer is on depreciation!!
The EVO should be a fun ride, when your not wrenching on it. The only option you will have, is to take it to SATAN! I have been there and I dont ever want to go back!!

As a good example, look at the first year of the S2000. Dealers were getting between $5k and $10k over MSRP in parts of the US. It was "only" a Honda but dealers were still able to gouge like mad. With each following model year the markup came down. If it follows this example, expect to be able to get decent deals by buying in obsure locations where people aren't interested in the sti for some reason and having it shipped.

As first I was thinking to get the Sti First thing when it come out but when I reall think abt it I will wait maybe by the end of the year or next year I don't need a new car at this moment plus there is no point to pay over MSRP just because it is the first year. like ppl say see the S2000 is a very good example.

Hello,
The S2k still sells for $5-10k above MSRP here in the Bay Area. Or should I say, it doesn't sell. It sits on lots. I've talked to one dealership on and off for the last two years. His S2ks sit for 4 months at a time. He's a dummy. He had a buyer walk out after he turned down an offer of MSRP. Instead, I think he just likes having the pretty car in the window.
At any rate, there are many good dealerships around. Many of them are promising MSRP. When the WRX first came out and people were paying several thousand over MSRP, some of the dealerships were refusing to play that game. In fact, I believe Subaru of Santa Cruz posted up on the old i-club that they would sell the WRX for $1k over invoice, whatever that turned out to be. A bunch of people got them at that price, which turned out to be below MSRP.
That wasn't a new trick for SSC. They also did the same thing when the 2.5RS came out. When the car first was announced, the word was there would only be 2000 of them. Subaru of Santa Cruz sold them for MSRP - even the first shipment.
So, you have a choice. You can be a sheep and you can pay thousands over MSRP, or you can be smart and support an honest dealership. Then you can pay MSRP or even less.
I am willing to bet that SSC will not charge more than MSRP on the new STi. And they won't add the $5k undercoat protection or whatever garbage other dealers try. SSC is an example of what other dealerships should strive for. Meanwhile, people drive hundreds of miles to get their cars and sometimes their service from SSC.

ok,
in defense of the Mcoupe and Corvette bashing:
You can pick up a new Mcoupe (not the M3) for 43,500
I assumed that their might be a dealer mark-up...again this is an ASSUMPTION.
if the car reached close to 40,000.00, I would much rather have the new Mcoupe than a WRX. As for the Corvette: I have the opportunity to take advantage of a discount and can get a brand spanking new corvette six speed for 37,500 due to this discount. Plus the corvette is getting on in years and you are likely to see discounting go into effect.
Now, I am not trying to bash the WRX...I'm on this board trying to learn about it aren't I!!! I think it is a modern classic, and is the best car in the price point.
My main point was that I hoped that the dealers didn't push the price up to a different price point, hence spelling disaster for subaru.

Bottom Line
Dealers are going to push the price up over MSRP. That's a given. Also, people are going to pay the thousands more to get the STI. So, If you are a dealer and know that people want the car bad enough to pay thousands over invoice, why not charge it? Profit. That's the whole reason that they are in business: to make $$$$. And if by some odd chance, there are some STIs left over, they will eventually sell them at MSRP. At least Subaru has the option of even selling these lines of cars at or above MSRP.
Most car companies (Honda, Toyota, Mazda, etc, etc) are only able to sell their cars under MSRP because they know that their cars are like a**holes; everyone has one. They are happy to sell you their cars below MSRP.

Hello,
Tom, just because there's demand, the dealers should gouge? That's terrible. I suppose it's unamerican of me to want to protect the innocent, but I think it's silly that you can go to one dealer and get bent over, while FOR SURE somewhere within half a day of you, there's a dealer who is not simply looking to make the most money off you at the initial sale. That's why I like telling everyone over and over again that you CAN get most cars (especially Subarus) for MSRP and maybe even less than that. If you CHOOSE to pay more, just know that it's a choice you've made.
A dealership that restrains itself and doesn't charge every last penny makes customers for life. Almost every single person who has gone to Subaru of Santa Cruz is about as fanatical about the place is, as I am! They warranty repair modified cars. They sell some aftermarket parts and install those and more parts. They charge appropriate amounts for services. I don't think there's a dealership visited by more enthusiasts for normal maintenance. *shrug* That's why it doesn't make sense to rape your customers at the initial sale.
In Southern California, Irvine Subaru is building a similar, yet different, reputation. They have a whole seperate aftermarket division. SPI Motorsport I know they didn't gouge on the 2.5 or the WRX as each of those came out.
Just look around and if a dealership is willing to charge thousands over MSRP, tell them "no thanks, [insert good dealership name here] is not being so greedy."

ok just to throw myself into the mix, Ive called a few dealers around st pete, tampa and orlando, I was told theres going to be a 5k markup across the board, and since all dealers will be doing this they arent looking to deal to much, I could be wrong and this all could just be reagonal, but it does sound about right for a high demand first year car, also remembe rthe new S4 will be out, 6speed, V8, AWD, leather and alcantara everything and it will be around the low 40's, looking at subie to Audi (I know its kind of a bad way to do this) but lets assume that for the WRX the 1.8t was its main comp, I know less hp but 29-32 for Quattro, leather and a nicer int and lets face it a german lux car, now if this holds steady and the new S4 is 42 and is also the STi's main assault range (besides the evo cuz its already below) Id venture the price would be between 32 and 35k, jsut from the past pricing structure, but since this is a new style of car released in the US (sports sedan, non luxery) all bets are off, will the majority of people pay 35k + whatever markups to drive wihtout leather and a nice int??? I know I would, but the masses wouldnt Im sure, but then again the first S4 exploaded more than everyone else said it was going to.

Joel Gat,
You talk so much about that Subbie dealership, you work there don't you??? Well, anyways, you say that people could get most cars, ESPECIALLY Subarus for MSRP, or less....ARE U CRAZY????? If you remember, this thread was started about the cost of the STI. Nobody is going to be getting the STI (unless they know someone realllly good) for even close to MSRP. Now, you tell me just one current model of Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Pontiac, etc that some1 is going to pay over MSRP---NONE! So, before you go writing posts that are totally untrue (Paying MSRP for the STI), use ur head 1st.
