does anyone know if you can do 60 in 2nd? if not, how fast are you going when you have to shift?

??? My 04WRX does 65+ in 2nd...
You won't get a decent 0-60 by having to change into 3rd.

Indeed, based on the tires and gear ratios, 2nd hits the 7000rpm redline at about 54 mph, so a shift to 3rd is required (unless the rev limiter lets you go to 7800, which I doubt). Similarly with the quarter mile -- 4th tops out at about 96 mph, so a shift to 5th is required.
An 8000rpm redline would seem to really make the performance numbers come out better. Seems a bit ambitious though, and a change to allow 7200 or 7400 would be great for autocross, but wouldn't make the 0-60 and 1/4mi numbers improve much if any.

Agreed. The wrx's gears are way too tall. I would much prefer the gears that were in a 2.5RS. 1st went to 28 - 2nd to 52 3rd to 72 etc. They weren't geared for 0-60 but for real drivable acceleration suited to the engine not catering to magazine numbers. So what if you loose to 60 and then absolutely rape someone to 70...? does it matter? Not really.. it's only standardized bragging rights which people can then commonly understand.
I think the the STI's gears are sweet!!!. In fact short gears are much better suited for canyon runs or anything with tight corners... I would put my money on a 2.5 RS up and down Mt. hamilton up against a wrx just because of that fact.

max speeds
Max allowable speeds for each gear:
(DIRECTLY FROM MY 2004 STI OWNERS MANUAL)
1st 25 mph
2nd 55
3rd 73
4th 96
no speed for 5th
I have yet to get the engine above 4000-4200 or so but I can tell you that it pulls pretty strong through 2nd and 3rd in the 3000-4000 range so we all need to experience what happens beyond that!
