On the paint, I have owned four Subies (no Impreza's though) and a VW, Honda, Volvo and several POS 'GM' products in the last two decades.
All but my Honda have suffered from orange peel in areas to varying degrees. The Subies unfortunately had it all over like a bad rash. The Honda on the other hand seems to be darn near perfect for factory while the Volvo seemed to have just three layers of covring (primer/base coat , outer coat & clear cost) and was soft as heck.
I've personally never complained about it though as I'm just not **** about my vehicles in that way. Not that being so is a bad thing, especially if you planned to show where it could cost you points. But in my case I'm more concerned about go than show.
As long as it ain't 'Primer Gray' I don't really mind about of orange.
Now for the delaers & warranty item stuff....
I personally am not the guy to ask as I was in the industry and worked for Subie for a long time. Prior to that I worked for a Subie dealer early in my career. Thus, every Subie I have owned has been discounted and I have had nearly everything warrantied by Subie via my contacts and professional courtesy.
I had the trans in my Legacy replaced at 93K on 100% warranty that way.
But with that said I can say that from the dealers side they see alot of vehicles come through that are abused, most oftenits quite evident. Sometimes its not, but with some investigation stuff can be found out.
Then they get customers who ***** and moan about brake pads not lasting more than 20K miles or pre-mature wear on wheel bearings & diffs on cars that have been aftermarket modded to make 300+ HP. Believe me, your local service manager, parts manager and lead tech will tell you they are sick & tired of modders coming through expecting Subaru to warranty anything that goes wrong with their car.
Heck, not even Audi with its full coverage warranty is instructing dealers to review all cars on a case by case basis. It seems now days everyone and their 'church lady' grandmother has a UTEC, chip or some other go-fast mod.
Now my wife on the other hand has owned a Subie before she met me and she had no problems. Many of my friends & relatives (about 12 folks) have owned Subie's too (after hearing about my own owners experience) and they too have reported no problems and are very happy with their repsective dealer experiences.
I think you have to take in to account your car, its maint. history, the mods made to it, and how its operated/driven.
In my own case when my STi arrives I will not be doing any performance mods to it other than a hidden and remote radr/laser detector, winter wheels & removing the rear spoiler. Why? Because I'm leasing it.
But also, because I know for a fact Subie will be cloesly montioring its warranty claims against it and dealers will be 'advised' to deny any claims against cars that even remotely appear to be modded/raced/abused or just plain seem sketchy.
The best thing to do is visit all of the Subie dealers in your area and talk to the service managers/writers to find out their individual policies. Then walk/sneak into the repair bays and talk with a tech or three. Thos guys will generally tell you the truth as they have nothig to loose, they get paid whether you buy a car or not. Find out from them the dealers policies and tendencies.
Then stop by the parts dept. and talk to the retail counterman (avoid the manager) and ask him similar/same things.
Lastly, stop by the service wiat area and talkto current owners (victims!). Ask about their opinion of the dealer and its warranty honoring tendencies. Now take their feedback with 3 grains of salt but if you get feed back from 5 of 7 saying they suck...then move on up the road.
Probably not the answer you were probably hoping for but its all I got.

I don't even think sti is severely modded, I would say they are two totally different car. cause you guys wouldn't say a forester is a severely modded Impreza, right?

the forrester and the impreza are two different types of cars on the subaru line. the subaru line includes the forrester, legacy, outback, baja, and impreza. now, the WRX is from the impreza line and the STi is from the impreza line as well. the forrester is from the forrester line, which is irrevelant in this situation. the WRX STi is still a WRX but tuned, modified, by STI (Subaru Technica International), which is subaru's tuning company, just like Ralliart is Mitsubishi's tuning company, and Nismo is Nissan's tuning company, TRD is toyota's, etc. to say that the STi isn't a highly modified WRX is pretty pointless because it's still a WRX, why do you think it's called the "WRX-STi". the STi is only saying that it's a WRX tuned by STi.

Well the STI would be the M3 to the WRX's 330i, but there are a surprizing amount of differences when you start to think about it. Other than the chasis and a few pieces, alot of the car is rather different, especially the engine/drivetrain as we know. But even things like the rear windshield, front bumper, suspension, etc. are all different parts then what come on a WRX, even the interior.
So i think its kind of almost a seperate model, but not entirely

Complete and independently developed/designed & constructed stand alone models;
'Regular' WRX 2.0T sedan = Mustang GT = BMW 3/5 Series
WRX 'STi' = Saleen GT = BMW M5/M3
Other notable examples include the Z06, RS6, S8 & S4
Standard production models that include hardware & trim level upgrades/revisions;
'Regular' WRX 2.0T wagon = Legacy wagon/sedan = Dodge Neon
WRX 'Outback' wagon = 'Outback' wagon/sedan = Dodge 'SRT-4'
Other notable examples include the Viper 'ACR', Boxster S, Cooper S & EVO.
I hope this helps...

There is no such thing as an "outback" WRX wagon btw. And I would say that the RS/TS would be more like a regular neon than the WRX, the WRX is still the "higher" performing version of the Impreza, while the STI is the flagship performance subaru.
More like the 325i vs. 330i vs. M3, or Sentra SE vs. SE-R vs. SE-R Spec-V, or Audi A4 1.8 vs. A4 v6 vs. S4, or the Lancer vs. Lancer Rallispec vs. EVO, but still all of those are different because the first two are both very simular while the RS/TS and WRX are a bit farther apart on the power scale and the STI is even farther along the scale than the WRX is to the RS/TS... So its still hard to compair.

what is a lancer rallispec? i do know of a lancer evolution tuned by ralliart, which is what is the best competion to the STi, or if not, better. keep in mind that ralliart is mitsubishi's tuning company like that of subaru's tuning company Subaru Technica International or STi as we know it. this is what the WRX-STi is, basically a WRX impreza base car tuned and modified by STi and i agree, subaru's flagship car.

Lan Evo is the archirival no doubt about it.

don't you mean the lancer oz-rally, which is basically the lancer cedia w/ oz-rally wheels, and yes, a few oz-rally stickers which is a bit nuts. on the other hand, i'm not quite sure if ralliart has a tuned version of the Evolution yet, which i do think they will bring down in the coming year or maybe the year after that to compete with the WRX-STi. or maybe they might just bring down some stage upgrades from ralliart like suspension packages, engine upgrades, etc. all this would be pending the sales of both the Evolution and the WRX-STi. the games have just begun.
