I have the OEM sub in my car, nothing too impressive, but better than nothing.
It doesn't match up very well with my polk audio door speakers.
I'd say the Kenwood Woox (KSC-WA62RC) is probably a good choice. Although it sticks out from under the seat about 1"
One guy on these boards has one in his Outback Sport. CardiffGiant I believe is his user name.
Why not just get the infinity bass link and set it in the trunk. It doesn't take much room.

you must have already purchased a sub by now. i just want to let everyone know that i just finished installing a Kenwood KSC-SW1 under the passenger seat of my 2006 WRX. It fits PERFECTLY. Doesn't stick out anywhere. Doesn't affect movement of passenger seat. Back seat driver on the passenger side won't even notice it's they're unless then bend over to look under. Anyways, I'm happy. Very easy to install. Gives you all the bass you'll most likely ever need unless you like the kind of loudness of bass that makes that stupid buzzing sound and you can't hear any lyrics to any songs.

I also stuck a Kenwood KSC-SW1 under the passernger seat of my 2006 WRX wagon. Mine also does not stick out at all and it totally unnoticeable visually. You would have to adjust the passenger seat all the way forward for you to see the black box under the seat.
I'm running the stock stereo system (California has the "OEM premium" speakers, which aren't so premium...) Anyways, the kenwood is nice but extends only a very narrow low end of the system, and drops out of the very very low 40 MHz stuff. A lot of the kenwood range is overlapped over the low end of the stock front door speakers, which is not good for people who want even sound. So I've set my crossover very low to reduce the overlap.
To illustrate my point, I'll fake up some approximate numbers.
The kenwood has a range of 120-60Hz. I have to set the crossover at 80Hz to reduce the overlap, which means I'm running it from 80-60Hz; a very narrow range. It starts dropping out below 60Hz-ish so you don't get that deep deep earthy rumble from a big 12" box in the trunk. And of course, it doesn't hit very hard at all without distorting.
I'd recommend it to people who can say yes to all these questions:
- do you run the OEM stereo and speakers?
- do you want to extend your bass range?
- do you refuse to give up cabin/trunk space for a sub?
- are you willing to blow $150-250 to get 80-60Hz?
