Underseat aftermarket subwoofer upgrade
I have a 2002 WRX sedan with the subwoofer option (the wimpy sub under the passenger seat). I have a spare amp that came out of another car that I'm no longer using and am kicking around the idea of a mild upgrade to the subwoofer situation. This project is going to be on a pretty tight budget if I do it at all, and I don't really want to give up any trunk space so that's out.
Here's what I'm thinking of doing:
1) One 8" subwoofer under the driver's seat, in a sealed box faced down with stand-offs to set the box off the carpet (to protect the sub from resting on the carpet and to transmit the box vibrations to the floor).
2) Mount amp under passenger seat in place of the stock subwoofer, using some of the factory sub wiring harness for the amp (i.e. the speaker level signals-will just use them for the speaker level amp inputs; and the switched +12V that apparently goes hot when the car is on-will use to turn on amp). I'll run a dedicated 8 or 10 gauge wire from the battery to the amp to provide amp power (this is because I seriously doubt the switched +12V circuit can provide adequate power for the amp, so I'll avoid that all together).
I'm hoping the result would be pretty clean and not too evasive.
Has anyone done this already? Is it worth the effort or is the end result not that much better than the stock sub configuration?
I'm only thinking about this because it would be a relatively cheap project and I don't have a lot of cash or time to invest right now. I have the amp already and even have the wood/carpet for a small box. Just need to buy a sub. 8" seems like the right fit considering constraints under the seat and required internal enclosure volume for the sub.
Thoughts/suggestions?
Thanks,
Lee

Has anyone built a sub box to go under the seat? I did a little measuring and it's gonna be a tight fit.
Oh, and BTW I'm probably going to use this sub: 8" Rockford Fosgate Stage 2

Looks like it has decent reviews, relatively shallow mounting depth (3-13/16") and the price isn't that bad.
