Well i know you said that you wanna keep the stock hu, but i think many here will agree that one of the first problems of sound quality for the wrx with upgraded speakers is the head unit. If you maintain the regular hu, you might not wanna go too crazy with the speakers.

With that in mind, basically all speakers can use the stock wiring, components though are usually meant to be amped. Mounting-depthwise, you can make a 3/4 inch thick spacer that'll accommodate up to 2.75(?) inch speakers, but you might get some vibration as the woofer hits the door panel. Most would recommend 6 1/2's if you're gonna make an adaptor anyway, if you're gonna keep the stock HU, i say go with some coaxials.
