Stock sound sysyem

Ok. This is really bothering me. I want to now what everyone thinks of the stock sound system in the WRX. If you have factory upgraded speakers/subwoofer please say so. Thanks!

Moderator: Could you please add another choice to the poll? Something like "I dont have an STi or WRX." Thanks!

My 02

First of all, My wagon came with this 6 disc thing that was freekn' huge. Who even has tapes anymore was my first question? Then as I allways do I went to install my amps and woofers to find that the system has no pre-outs. I replaced it the next day. ****as the fresh prince says***I adjust the bass and let the ALPINE blast.

I like that it comes with a 6 disc changer and even though it doesn't have pre-outs I still found a way to hook up an amp and subwoofers, just use a converter and that way you can use the stereo to power your stockers as mids and highs and push no bass through them, and just use your sub as bass.

wvjnky, nvub and yapster i assume you guys either couldnt or didnt get the factory subwoofer? and pre-outs would be what you would plug the wires of new speakers into? i dont really know much about this stuff...if anyone has a site i could learn from that would be nice...and thanks for all the replies and votes!

I could have but didn't want to pay all that extra money for something that I could install myslef and have sounding better for less money. I wouldn't advise on getting the factory sub. To hook up subs you need an amp to power it, to hook up an amp you need to run power wire and ground wire to it, as well as preouts that run to the stereo and a remote wire that turns on the amp when the stereo is turned on. You need RCA cables to run from the preouts of the stereo to the amp, then the sub speaker wires run into the amp. It's pretty simple. If I find a good site I'll post it here later.

I have the factory upgrade and it's just ok. My sub needed to be turned way down to get any clarity at all, from the factory it was turned all the way up, with the crossover set to the highest frequency. It sounded like crap. The sub definitely does not hit. It suits my needs fine, but it would be totally inadequate for an audiophile.

FWIW, I was stoked that the stock head unit had a tape deck. I have a grocery bag full of old tapes that I bust out once in a while. It's also nice for when my buddies with i-pods ride in the car, because you can use one of those tape adaptor thing-a-ma-bobs.

You're better off getting the cheapest thing they got to offer and then upgrading everything yourself... I heard this directly from one of the salesmen at Irvine Subaru that has the 2002 WRX with the upgraded sound system. He said "If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have wasted the money on that system" He said the subwoofer gets too bassy. For the 400 or 500 that it costs to get the factory sub you can get a pair of nice JL Audio 10's and a good amp to push em.

So the factory upgrades cost about 500(speakers +woofer)...something like that...for 500$ i could get speakers, woofers, and amps that would be better? also, would it be easy to install them? how long would it take a pro?
