Sti Stereo and Custom Sub Enclosure or not??
Hello all,
Had the Sti for 2+ months now, need some tunes, don't get me wrong the engine sounds great, but the occasional squeak and rattle drive me nuts.
Target: light weight (not feather weight) balanced system
JL Audio XR650Csi 6.5 components up front
JL Audio 300/4 under passenger seat, 75 x 2 and a bridged 150 for the sub.
Monster cable through out
Alpine 7995 deck (no amp)
JL Audio 12w3V2 12 inch sub in custom fiberglass enclosure molded into the drivers sider rear of the trunk. See pic for example.
XM Alpine module and low profile antenna
NO rear speakers.
Install: Tweeter in Boston, great shop and great rep in the area, $2800 + for this setup.
The sub enclosure represents $600 of that total for the custom fabrication/molding etc, am I better off with a custom box that can be removed at will etc... Overall weight of a finished fiberglass enclosure and a traditional MDF box are supposedly close....
I have used Brown Bread acoutic dampner on all 4 doors (inner + outer skin), rear seat area, complete trunk floor and lid.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks.

Are you talking about the Tweeter across from BU in Cambridge?
I was going to with a similar set up, I have changed my plans a bit now. I am going to remove my spare tire and have the Sub enclosure in there.
Did you Dynamat the trunk lid and does it vibe/rattle?

I am talking about the Tweeter across from BU, I think it's technically in Brookline, almost in Boston right on Com. ave.
Anyways, I don't know if this was you, but they said an 04 sti was in the week or two before and they were going to do a custom sub etc... that person backed out as I was going to listen to the setup before making a decision.
I said I'd go for the same config, with the subs, fronts and single smaller amp for a lower weight less complex solution... I'm just not sure the custom sub enclosure is really worth $600...
THinking of going with a custom box, with a nicer 10 JL Audio sub that can be removed...

Yes that was me they were talking about, I didn't back out I told them I would be away for the next couple weeks, anyway ya, they are the ones that put in my Z3 Shifter, lol that is funny **** maybe I'll see ya in there sometime! I am going to go with a custom box that will mount in the spare tire well to maximize trunk space,

Cool man, good to see a fellow Sti in the area looking at audio... you can email me at sl@nomisco.com.
From what I can tell they do some quality work, spoke with Ken a little bit in the shop, impressed with some of the projects they have done.
The spare tire setup would be nice and even more stealth, I take it that would be a 10" setup....
To answer a previous question, I have used acoustic dapmner (brown bread) throughout the doors (innner/outer shell), rear seat area and full trunk with lid, one layer on all, approx 35-40 sq ft. I'm trying to watch the weight of all this stuff...
Still not sure on a removable box or custom fiberglass enclosure..

I've been doing a lot of fiberglass work lately. Check out this thread...
https://www.i-club.com/forums/showth...+sub+enclosure
I just finished building/installing a custom 10" enclosure for the passanger side trunk of an STi. Charged $400, also included some installation and amp work so a similar box for a 10" is probably more like $350. And actually the enclosure in the picture you posted is much easier than what i've done, I would charge more like $300 for that.
I've got 2 duplicates of the mold that I used for the previous box, i'm going to finish them soon and was originally going to sell them on ebay, but if anybody is interested let me know. I'm a perfectionist who likes building things, so the quality of my work is very high!
just sharing some options!
