replacing oem speakers for aftermarket. exact fit.
I'd like to replace my oem speakers for better aftermarket speakers. Without doing any modifications to the mounting locations.
As far as I found out the front doors are 6 and 1/2 and rear door have 4" speakers.
I found two models through crutchfield for the front.
Pioneer TS-G1647 - $49.99/pair
Sony XS-W1620 6-1/2" - $69.99/pair.
These two are listed as "P" fit.. and about 10 models for the back that are listed as EZ-Fit.
Can someone post what they replaced and what they put in? Size/brand/price/installation wise/how did it fit?/problems no problems?
I'm quite sure I don't want to swap the HU, I'd like to replace speakers, add sub and an amp.
Thanks.
P.S I have 2003 WRX sedan.

I replace my stocks with kenwood excelron componet sets.
Price, I got a deal on them, usually $300 a set, I paid $200. 6 1/2 in the front with tweets, 5 1/4 in the rears with tweets. They fit like stock. Sound great. I mounted tweets in the rear deck.
Hope I can help,
Bryanb

It depends on whether you already have the factory "upgraded" speakers or not. The optional speakers include spacer/adapters for the front door speakers that allow 6-1/2" units to fit. Without the adapters they won't go in there unless you get aftermarket spacers or make your own. If you need them look up East Coast Scooby on NASIOC, maybe on here as well, he was selling them.
Even with spacers not all 6-1/2s will fit, some are too deep. Get the dimensions for any speakers you are considering and measure the available space in the door, including whatever spacers you will be using.
Crutchfield's fit information is not always correct, but at least their return/exchange policy is liberal so if something doesn't fit you can just swap it out.

mulder- great info. my car came with the premium sound
upgrade, so i assume it already has the adapters in place.
with that in mind, would you know:
1. how deep the "ugrade" adapter is (1/2" or 3/4")
2. would boston pro's fit with the factory adapter?
6.5 or 5.25?
thanks,
ken

Re: kenwood
According to other messages I suppose you had the upgraded speakers from subaru already.. For some reason crutchfield says 4" for the back but you said 5 -1/4 fit. Is that what the upgraded package comes with?
Where exactly did you mount the tweaters? Do you have a sub? Stock HU?
Any info would be appreaciate it, I'd rather go with 5 - 1/4 instead of 4". I'd like to use stock HU thought.
Let me know
Thanks

Ken, sorry I don't remember how deep the adapter is, it's been a while since I was in there. I'd guess 1/2" but don't quote me.
Can't say about the Boston Pros, you really have to measure the depth first, or make sure you can return them if they don't fit.
With the adapters you use 6-1/2s in the front.

I choose the kenwood dual mags series because of the mounting depth in the front doors.. They are real light and some new high tech magnet that doesn't stick out far..
Fronts fit in perfect
Rears. All i did is take off the factory spacer and drilled 4 holes to
screw in the speaker...
I mounted the tweets in the rear deck.. Kind of right above the strut mount..I used flush mount so it looks pretty stock.
I didn't want to change the head unit but did, cause I got the screen on ebay and started going crazy.
I would post pics but it dont let me, do I need a place to post the pics? If any one could help, I have goods digital pix
Thanks, Bryanb

yep
Those are them.. They fit like a champ, and sound good too!
I have a Kenwood KAC-959 5-channel amp pushing everything. All four doors and a sub. Just Picked up a 12" sub today, gona have my boy make me a box.
Note: For the crossover I hot glued it inside the door panel that comes off, plus just to ensure good sound I ran better gauge wire to all four doors. It was a little work but easier than it sounds.Plus I had a person on each door.

running infinity kappa
6.5 in the front=no install issues, used a 1/2" spacer
5.25 in the rear=these speakers fit fine, BUT the tweet sticks out too far and won't allow the door panel to fit. had to trim the doors and reverse mount them (from inside the door)<---i don't recommend doing this as it was kind of a pita.
