Programming new remotes

So I've found a few different guides on the internet for programming remotes for my car (2002 wrx wagon). My car does have the alarm. Now am I correct in assuming that my car should have the round button remote and I should be following those directions? My car didn't come with a remote.

The directions all say to make sure the doors are unlocked and closed and to turn the key from lock to on 10 times within 15 seconds and it should honk once. I've tried doing this several times and it doesn't do anything. Am I missing a step here or something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
