Not sure where this thread belongs and thought this was a good a place as any. I installed a drop in Optima and thought I'd share the pics:

That would be his Forester. Don't know what the situation is there, but with the Impreza if you get the "universal" 35/75 Red Top then yes you do have to replace the positive cable to the starter with a longer one. However if you get the standard Group 35 (sometimes referred to as reverse or 35R), which is the one Peaty has, it is a direct fit.

Like the man says no extension nessesary of the cables, this is not a universal battery but a true Group 35 drop in, the terminals are close to the edge and the positive is on the left and negative on the right at the back just like the OEM battery. The only difference is it's a little shorter. I understand they have a spacer you put on the bottom to raise up but I just put a few spacers on the hold down rod for now. No point in having something that heavy any higher than it needs to be (althought an inch higher most likely won't make a heck of a difference in real life) The funky cabling you see around my battery is just the grounding kit.
AFAIK this will be a drop in across most all of the subaru line (not sure about the SVX)

The lower height is actually an advantage, it lowers the center of gravity for the car by some infinitesmal amount. But as you said in the real world for street driving it makes no difference.
I made no attempt to raise mine up as long as the holddown clamp still worked, it just had to thread down all the way.
I have the 35/75 because that's all that was available when I bought it, had to replace the cable but it was only $5 and an hour of my time. Of course, had the proper 35 been out there I would have gotten that instead.
