I need to install a new headunit but i'm new to subarus
Ok, how do I get the stock radio out of an Impreza? I've got a regular DIN sized cd player with the empty slot tray under neither. I've done searches but they ALL say i need to remove the cup holders from under neith the top vents. I dont have cup holders under my vents. So where do I start?
Also, i bought a new Alpine headunit and their KCA-420i iPod interface adapter. it measures about 4.75"x 4"x 1.3" Is there enough room back there to mount it anywhere and keep the empty slot tray?

What year impreza do you have? Im not sure which models the cup holders started but in the middle underneath ur vents should be a push-to-pop-out cup holder on the right. Pop this out and unscrew and slide it out. From here all u have to do is pop off the plastic that surrounds everything in the center (it comes of fairly easy) and then unscrew the current brackets to the radio. its very simple.

like i wrote in the first post, I do not have those cup holders under the top vents. There is nothing to push. I've got a 2005 2.5RS. Its bottom line with absolutely no extra options. I think this may be why my car is slightly different with no push out cup holders. my cup holders are in the console between the seats.

i finally figured out how to do it after putting in some new scratches and gouges in my nice new center console. first, pull the ashtray insert out. You'll see a hole big enough to stick a few fingers into and grab. Now Pull up and away. the trim around the shifter should pop right out. from there you'll see two screws. take those out and pull that trim upwards. You'll probably need a thin screwdriver to help loosen the top portion of the radio trim. but its just a few clips holding it on towards the top of the trim. Hope that helps. Too bad no one else was willing to reply earlier. I'm sure someone else had done it before me.

remove the shift ****, pull the shift trim out of the way,
you'll have better access to get the ashtray out. cig lighter has a wire, you can unplug that also. the center console is all held in by clips. the radio is held in by screws. i think at subaruparts.com check out the install guide for the turbo boost gauge,

iPod Interface
I spent the day installing an Alpine HU and the Alpine KCA-420i iPod interface adapter. Everything is installed and working but I screwed up on placing the iPod adapter. I installed it behind the center console above the air bag controller I used two large pieces of Velcro to hold it together. I hung the unit on the plastic under the HVAC controls.
I installed the iPod in the compartment behind the e-brake. I had to create a hole big enough for the iPod connector to pass through. But I screwed up. The center piece that holds the ashtray doesn't fit back in. The back of the ash tray bumps up against the adapter. I put the console back together without the ashtray until I figure out where else to put this thing.
Has anyone else installed one? Where did you put it? One possibility would be to get a gauge pod housing and put it in there.
